What is the furthest you''d go as far as the diamond''s color when the ring is platinum? Could you go as far as a J without noticing the yellow tint in a platinum ring?

I''ve heard that when the color is of lesser value you should put it in yellow gold so it appears whiter.

PQ just got a J and right into plat it went

I would rather say that the miss-match between "lower color" colorless diamonds and white metals is more myth than fact. Some jewelers would say that placing a "tinted" stone in white metal makes it look whiter (since it reflects the white stuff around) others would say that you need to buy a high white stone for a platinum setting: I guess it depends on who sells what.

A fraction of the population seems to disagree with my lenience

even after seing what the combination looks like, but "fraction" is the key word here. A one letter choice? J.

Thanks a lot

I'm asking because all of the diamond jewelery that I've been looking at lately, I've been looking in the I/SI1 range and I know that my girlfriend likes platinum. So I take it that putting I/SI1 stones into platinum is typically a safe bet?

Yes. Actually, "I" is also the bet of most ring makers out there: this is the "commercial" white grade... so one can say that a whole industry of E-ring makers rely on this bet

Hi Fin!

Here's a pic of my new ring for your reference. 1.264 carat, J, VS2, set in Platinum.

When I started working on the ring, I had a H color diamond I was upgrading with White Flash. I was considering H and I color diamonds in the 1.10-1.15 carat size. You know the rule,.... Typically people don't notice the difference in adjacent color grades. H to I shouldn't be a problem.

When I chatted with Brian Gavin at White Flash, he was really pumped about this diamond. It is bigger, which was attractive, but it was J, which made me nervous. During one conversation, Brian had my H and this J side by side. He said he saw only a slight, barely noticible color difference between the 2 diamonds. I can honestly say I am glad I trusted Brian. He was absolutely right that this diamond would work in plat.

I ususally don't reccommend going lower than I color when mounting in platinum. The J colors draw a little tinge of yellow somtimes and they look much better if mounted in yellow gold.
In my opinion stay with the minimum of I color if mounting in white metals.

Wouldn't you agree, DM, that the actual color shown by a diamond depends on the hue present in the rough??

While yellow is probably the most common hue, diamond rough can have other hues. My J is not yellow at all. Even looking thru the pavillion, there is no yellow. This diamond does not seem to have been cut from rough with a yellow hue.

IMHO, the choice of an I, J, or K colored diamond will depend on the hue of the rough the diamond was cut from, combined with the quality level of the cut.

I think this looks gorgeous.. What did you pay for the stone if you dont mind me asking?

I love the setting too!

The diamond listed for $5820. White Flash gives a 5% discount to Price Scope Forum Members, which was a big help toward getting the setting!

I would venture to say that I is fine in platinum...I saw an old euro cut in plat and it looked great to me!

Hi! My diamond is a J (1.5 carats) but because it's an ideal cut stone, I cannot tell the difference between it and a lot of G and H's that I've put it next to at jewelry stores! And when people see it, they comment on how much it sparkles, and most of them comment on how white it is (as I chuckle inside!) If they only knew! Mine is set in white gold, which is just like platinum, and as long as it's a really good cut, there shouldn't be any problems! Good luck!
