I am a college student ready to graduate next year. For over two years I pursued this one unbelieveable girl and finally won her over. I want to propose to her next year and I''m starting to reseacrh engagement rings.

I have a very very tight budget and I''m trying to get the nicest ring possible. (Budget 3-4000.)

I have no concerns with online shopping however I have a friend at school whose parents own a jewerly store so I might get a good deal there. I could also look at what C is important to me.

I know she wants an asscher/square emerald cut. I know she wants white gold/pt band. I know she wants a solitaire. There will be no added wedding band. She doesn''t wear much jewerly.
Here is the deal she can''t know when I''m going to propose to her and I cannot under no circumstances take her ring shopping.

I would really like to get a 1 carat or bigger ring. Is this possible? What things should I look for with this asscher cut like depth and table? What things do I need to watch out for when shopping?

I just want to get a really nice ring that she will love forever.

Thanks for the help

Asschers face up smaller than round brilliants. I don''t think you''ll be able to get a 1 carat asscher in your price range. Check out www.goodoldgold.com That''s who I bought my asscher from. Ask for Jonathon or Tim.

i know she will love whatever I get but I of course want to really dazzle her.

any opinions about buying rings off of ebay?

Also can anyone furnish any pictures that show the difference between asschers with ideal tables and asschers with large tables?

Stay away from ebay, we hear too many horror stories!!! I''m sure Storm will be along to help you with tables and such. He''s passionate about asschers. He helped me pick mine.

it wouldn't make any difference if we did. for one, you can't look at any one aspect of a diamond to determine the quality. a big table alone is not going to make one asscher better or worse than another. all of the angles and measurements work together. also, by nature of the cut, the pattern is very important when choosing an asscher. you could have two stones that seem identical on paper, but their patterns may be quite different. you need to look at the diamond as a whole.

I think the best thing to do is to contact GOG as Kaleigh mentioned, tell them your budget and have them start looking for you. They WILL find you a gorgous asscher. I also think with your budget and the fact that asschers tend to require higher color/clarity, a 1 ct. stone may be out of the question.

How color sensitive is she?
Dropping down to a J vs2 you might be able too do it.
For example: need more pictures but this one might work..
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamond.asp?b=16&a=12&c=77&cid=131&item=859577
The picture looks like a good start.

But its likely that some people will see some tint too it.

H is the safe zone color wise and they start around 4500 for a 1ct vs2.

Is that picture a J colored diamond is is it a generic phtot of an asscher?

Also what kind of band/setting should I go with to enhance the diamond''s "size?"

I have time to really investigate this but im serious and what your expert opinions.

Thanks

Wow that website is great! First one I found that I could look at all the diamonds individually.

click on magnified image and its an actual image.
Its not that good a picture(diamond is tilted) but good enough to say its worth getting more pictures if your interested.
There are a bunch of good threads in the FAQ section of PS on asschers if you want too read them.

As far as a setting goes id put as much as possible into the stone and go with a simple 4 prong solitaire.

By their nature,Asschers and other square shapes will have a smaller diameter than their equivalent round. For example,a 1 carat Asscher will have 5.6-5.7 mm diam.
as opposed to a round 1 carat with 6.5 mm .So if you want to dazzle her, you''ll need a bigger Asscher.

The thinner the band, the bigger the diamond will look. I''d get a simple white gold 4 prong setting with the thinnest band I could find. Most places will only do bands as small as 2 mm.

what are the primere web-sites for quaility asscher diamonds that I should be studying?

I really, really think you need to get some info from one of her friends. If she only wants to wear one ring and no wedding ring, then you might want to go with a more substantial engagement ring setting. But I am kind of curious as to why she wouldn''t be interested in at least a thin wedding band. A halo ring where there is gold and diamonds around the center stone helps add size to the diamond. A thicker x-prong solitaire might work, too, if she really doesn''t want a wedding band.

The key is to find out what she loves and then suprise her. She does need to know that an asscher is going to appear smaller than a similar weight round so she won''t be disappointed with the size. I do think a halo would help a smaller stone look larger, though.

so she has only worn one ring since 7th grade. Its a thin plain white gold ring on her left ring finger thats it. She is plain but her beauty isn''t. She has also dropped hints about having a solitaire only and that means more money becuase the price goes up with size exponetally.
