I need some guidance on where to buy my ring. I have 8 days to physically have the thing in my hands. I'm looking to spend 10 thousand.

I work near 5th avenue, so I have access to bunch of places. However, I just dont have the time to go shopping around. So far, I have looked at De Beers and Tiffany's. 10k doesnt go as far as I would have liked in those places. Should I try blue nile? What if i dont like what I get?

Oh and the other catch, i'll only have about 2 days to order it because i'll be using a new credit card that i applied for yesterday. I should have it around wednesday. Is that even enough time to have it by Friday? So i guess blue nile is out of the question. From what i've priced, I get get a 1.25 carat of similar specs on blue nile for the same price as a sub 1 carat at tiffany. Is a quarter carat really that much bigger?

I can ramble on for days. Guidence please? Good places to look on 5th ave? Should i just go tiffany because you cant go wrong there?

PS- need princess cut

No! You can get a lot more for your money elsewhere. Is there any way you can get over to Long Island? Jonathan at Good Old Gold stocks excellent quality princess cuts as well as some other beautiful square stones.

(In fact, you really wouldn't have to go there. As soon as you get the CC approved, you can actually call them and they could set the stone in a simple setting and probably overnight it to you. But you need to get going!)

I actually commute to NYC from Long Island. Those look good! I''m new to this- are stores negotiable? My price is 10K on the dot. With tax. What kind of setting should i get? I''m guessing the smaller the thickness, the larger the diamond looks.

this one looks great if its eye clean! Ask jonathan if it is, you can call him at GOG and he will be able to tell you. But if it is this is for sure a winner.

Put this in a setting like this

or maybe like

I'm not sure the prices on those but I'm sure you can be right at your price range with the second setting. The first setting you shouldn't have any problems withgoing over at all . You can of course get those in yellow gold if thats what she prefers.

SI is on the lower end, right? She''s made it clear to me that quality is more important than size (speaking about somebody elses ring, but what i guessed was a hint)

That''s why I was looking at tiffany and de beers.

Is good old gold a popular and reputable place?

GOG IMO is fantastic they will help you find a really beautiful ring that will leave your FF gobsmacked :).

I wouldn't say SI is on the lower end. And I wouldn't say it's not of high quality either. Alls SI means is that is's easy to see inclusions under a 10X maginification. So, unless your gf is going to walk around with a loop on her glasses and pointing it out to everyone, in my opinion, why pay more $$$ for something that you can SEE with your own eyes? That's just my opinion. Now, you can get eye clean I's, but it's very hard to find. I would avoid any I1, I2, or I3, these stones are what I'd call "on the lower end" clairity stones. The only difference between a VS2 and a SI1 is how easy the inclusions are to see under 10X maginification. Meaning the SI1 should be easier to spot the inclusions under vs. the VS2. But again, the way I look at it, why pay for something you can't SEE the difference in.
Color on the other hand, many women can't go any lower then H because they can see the color. My diamond is an I color and it faces up white to me, but it all depends on the person wearing it. I would stick with H if you don't know.
Just remember that CUT IS KING! You can have a E VVS1 diamond with a terrible cut and a G SI1 that is hearts and arrows and I'm sure that at least 9 out of 10 women would pick the G SI1 over the E VVS1 with a bad cut. Just food for thought! Hope this helps!

Thanks for all the responses. That being said, I am going to check out GOG. I have a specific diamond I am looking at from this thread. Are there any places right here in NYC (where i am right now) that has a descent bang for the buck? 5th ave? Or is it pointless to look for bargains on 5th avenue?

You could contact Mark at www.engagementringsdirect.com also, he is in the diamond district, he like GOG will have excellent diamonds which are fairly priced.

I''d listen to Lorelei. I have only been to GOG and if you check my thread "operaton round" you''ll see why. I have heard great things as well about Mark. I know for a fact that you get what you are looking for at GOG within your budget because I was there last night and saw a myriad of stones, goodluck and we are here for you.

Well, I went to GOG today and yes I am going for one of the diamonds suggested to me in this thread (scavenger hunt - look for which one is on reserve!). Thank you all for steering me in the right direction.

Oooh, you can''t go wrong with a 1.5 carat beauty like that! She''s going to be blown away! What setting are you going to do?

You can see inclusions in some SI1 stones without magnification. Also, according to the Pricescope tutorial 1 in 100 people can see inclusions in VS2 stones. It says that if that bothers you then get a VS1.

If it's SI1 you have to find out whether it's eye clean.

I feel bad saying something different than what you've written but this is my understanding.

Clarity is graded from the side in unmounted stones, while generally people view them from the top in rings. There is then variety in how visible the flaws are in SI stones, depending on the flaw, its placement, the eyes of the viewer, the mounting and lighting conditions.

I have an SI stone and can see the flaws from the top, especially in some lighting conditions. But your average viewer of the ring on my hand cannot. If I had to do it over again, I would *probably* get VS, but the current SI doesn''t bother me very often, so maybe I''d go for a bigger SI stone given budget constraints and just try to get a more eye-clean SI. Cheers!

Tiffany style Platinum. I really liked the the 1.21 and 1.23 on here but the 1.5 really made a big difference... it dwarfed the other 2. I was trying to find reasons NOT to get the 1.5 for about 30 minutes. I couldnt see any of the inclusions in the 1.5 with my naked eye. I was able to see them under the microscope and magnifying glass also (there are just a few small scrape type things in it... not too major).

I recently met with Mark Turnowski at ERD and he was LOVELY and so helpful. If you really want to go see someone in NY I highly recommend him. However, Jonathan (and Marie) at GOG are awesome to and I would absolutely call them about any of the amazing stones that diamondseeker posted -- all AMAZING.

Good Luck!!!!

My diamond in my avatar is from GOG, so I know how great they are to work with! They also carry an outstanding selection of diamonds. I am so glad you were able to go there and see for yourself the different sizes and colors!

Congrats Wolfgang! Let us know what you end up going with and definitely remember to post ALOT of pics!
