I need Princess cut advice please! Depth/Table...

Hello!

I''ve been reading everyone''s comments here for a while and finally decided to jump in! My boyfriend of 6 years and I have decided to get engaged. Our budget is $15-18k and I like Princess cut. The actual CUT and therefore "fire" is very important to me but it''s hard not to get caught up in all of it and I often feel overwhlemed! Does anyone have an opinion as to the quality of this diamond I''m considering:

Polish & Sym - Excellent
Crown- don''t know yet. I''m expecting 10x pics to check for eye clean status along with a scan of the GIA Cert later today. If anyone has an opinion on this cut or the pricing please let me know! I was hoping to find a VVS2 and pay a bit more but I can''t seem to find anything at the moment.

Hi Sarah and welcome!

Is this diamond with an online vendor? If so, then see if you can get an ASET image as well as some photographs of the diamond, as unfortunately we can''t tell much by numbers with these shapes. Photos at least are essential to be able to get an idea of how this diamond looks, so if you could post them when you have them, that would be a big help - as well as to check that it is eyeclean. But also ask the vendor to give you a detailed description of the diamond, to make sure it meets your expectations for '' eyecleanliness.''

Except that your diamond may be hiding some carat weight in the thick girdle, it looks promising by these numbers. Table less than depth, depth small enough to give it good spread...but as Lorelei said, we can''t judge fancy shapes by the numbers like we can rounds. Make sure this SI2 stone is eye-clean to your standards. You do NOT need 10x pics to do this! You need to have yourself or a trusted 20/20 pair of eyes look over the stone at whatever you define as eye-clean distance (I prefer 3 inches because I''m slightly nearsighted; many peopls use 8 inches as their criterion). However, the pictures will be helpful to see if the stone is beautiful or could be a dud! And if you can get one, post an ASET and/or IS image with your pics!

Thank you both for responding!! True, I need to get those pictures and ask for an ASET image, I appreciate the advice on that. I am shopping online right now, the reason for that being my inability to judge diamonds up close. They all look lovely and sparkly to me to a certain degree. I can see the difference in color and cut/fire- color mostly- but when it comes to clarity I''m lost. The numbers that determine cut and the WIDE variation of pricing on what I''m looking for is a lot to handle. I walked away from the whole idea of a ring a few weeks ago, it''s my guy who''s pushing me to find something, rare I know!

As such, I want to make sure I use every dollar on the best stone possible. I don''t trust salespeople, having been one myself, so the odds of me buying retail are slim to none! I do have a couple of e-mails out to local wholesale dealers in the hopes of SEEing a few. Long story short, I need a diamond guru in the DC area. I think I''ll post a query on that!

Most welcome Sarah! Also if you are set on a Princess, you could check out some AGS0 cut grade, some of the online vendors carry them as in house diamonds, that could make it easier to find a beautifully cut stone if you can find one in the weight, colour, clarity and budget range you want. Alternatively work with a vendor who also has in house diamonds, but can provide photos and ASET images for GIA graded Princess, that way it is easier to determine the better cut diamonds.

They just sent me the GIA report and a sales pitchy e-mail. I posted the GIA report in my thread asking for a DC/Northern VA Guru. It all seems a bit amateur; no crown info and those crystals look large. Any experience with them? I responded asking for an ASET image...we''ll see what happens!

Their e-mail:

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is the most respected diamond grading company in the world. If they grade a diamond as having an SI2 clarity, there will be slight inclusions microscopically. At this time, there is no way for me to send 10X images for this diamond as even the diamond company does not have them available. I have included a copy of the GIA grading report for you to view. If you decide to purchase this beautiful diamond, you will have a right of return. If you are unsatisfied, we ask that the diamond be returned within 2 weeks."

If they don''t have an ASET image I''d guess it''s a walk away situation.
