I want to buy an engagement ring and my fiance''e doesn''t want to buy online. So I went to a local brick & mortar and found this stone.

GIA cert
Round Brilliant
Measurements 6.8-6.84 x 4.05mm
1.08 carat
F color
VVS1 Clarity
Cut, Polish and Symmetry and Exellent
Girdle med - slightly thick 4.0%

Depth 61.2%
Table 57.0%
Crown 33.0%
Pavilion 41.2%

Asking Price $10,460

I have not seen the stone yet. The Jewler said he can have it in the store Monday. Is it worth taking a look at? I put the numbers in the HCA calc and it gave a rating of (2 - Very Good - Worth buying if the price is right)

He also has another stone that looks OK on paper.
AGS cert
Round Brilliant
Measurements 6.5-6.56 x 3.9mm
1.04 cts
Cut Ideal 0
Color AGS 1.0 (F)
Clarity Grade AGS 2 (VVS2)

Depth 61.2
Table 56.2
Crown 34.2
Pavilion 40.8

It has a HCA value of 1.1
This stone is overseas and he cannot get it on consignment so I must buy it before I can see it. He said if it''s not up to specs of the cert I can return it. Is this stone worth taking a chance on? The price is about the same as the first, maybe a little less.
If anyone can help me on this I would appreciate it.

The AGS stone is safer by the number but the GIA is worth looking into. Have you seen the GIA stone yet?

Which city are you in? There maybe be a trusted PS vendor near you that you can visit?

I live in San Francisco and I haven''t seen the stone yet. He said he can get it monday.

I prefer the AGS diamond, the GIA might be ok but the numbers on the AGS stone are preferable.

Another vote for the AGS stone. An AGS0 rated stone, as I understand it, not only has the proportions and angles to make their highest grade, but is also viewed by an experienced grader for overall performance.

Same here: I feel more comfortable with the AGS diamond.

The GIA stone looked very clean under 10x mag but under an Ideal scope, it did show some light leakage. It was a nice stone but for money I''ll be paying, I want an excellent stone. The Jeweler said the AGS stone is no longer available. There is another stone he can get.

GIA cert 5101404406
cut round brilliant
measurements 6.45 - 6.52 x 3.99mm

1.02cts
F color
VVS1 clarity
Excellent cut, polish and symmetry

Depth 61.5%
Table 56.0%
Crown 34.0%
Pavilion 40.8%

It has an HCA rating of 1.0

Please give me any feedback on this new stone. The Jeweler also said that AGS grades color more leniently than GIA. He said that an AGS grade of F sometimes might be a G in the GIA scale. Is this true?

Numbers on that one are excellent! There have been a couple of threads that mention AGS color grading. If I remember right, they tightened up the color grading slightly some years ago and are now much more in line with GIA for color. The grading survey done in 2004 by some PS vendors shows that AGS and GIA were very similar on stones submitted to both labs. The results of that survey are under Reviews in the menu at the top of the page.

Ditto, looks like a great diamond!
