Hi! I am new on this forum and I''''ve been looking and eyeing everybody''''s gorgeous rings. I was thinking of upgrading my stone. My stone is a GIA .84 D VS1 with triple excellent, etc.

I saw this and wanted to get an opinion on it before purchasing it.

It is a 1.46 GIA D SI2 Triple Excellent ( Completely Eye clean....lowering my standards...not sure if it''''s a good thing)

7.24 X 7.29 X 4.50
girdle: Medium
depth: 61.9%
table: 56%
flourescence: faint

Should I hold out is this okay??

Thanks for any feedback!

Should hit the report concern button and have an admin move your thread to the Rockytalky forum. You will get more responses there. With that said, we need more info on the new stone such as crown and pavillion angles, price etc... Have you seen the stone?

Ditto Beach, we need the crown and pavilion angles please, if you could post those that would be very helpful. If not then post the GIA report number and we can look them up from there.

Hi! Sorry it took awhile but here is the report number.....

GIA certificate number is: 1102657339

Thanks for any help:)

Thanks, I will look it up....

Here we go, the comment has been made " a brown patch of colour is not shown", I would find out EXACTLY what this means by getting an unbiased expert to check the diamond before purchase. Which vendor has it? The angle combo needs an Idealscope image which you could request from the vendor in order to check it out, the diamond is also facing up a bit small for the weight.

http://www2.gia.edu/reportcheck/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.showReportVerification&reportno=1102657339&weight=1.46

Also the proportions are different and it has no fluorescence compared to the diamond's proportions you listed in the first post, I think these are 2 different diamonds...

Thanks for your feedback! I think it is safe to say I''ll skip this one. How about this one for specs?

Round Brilliant
Measurements: 7.36 - 7.40 x 4.55 mm
Carat Weight: 1.51 carat
Color Grade: F
Clarity Grade: SI1
Cut Grade: Excellent
Proportions:
Depth: 61.7%
Table: 58%
Crown Angle: 34.5°
Crown Height: 14.5%
Pavilion Angle: 41.2°
Pavilion Depth: 44.0%
Star length: 50%
Lower Half: 75%
Girdle: Medium, Faceted (3.0%)
Culet: None
Finish:
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Fluorescence: None
Comments: Twinning wisps are not shown. Surface graining is not shown.

Should I be avoiding all SI1 stones? Thanks so much!

Steep in the pavilion angle. Avoid.

Nothing wrong with SI1 as long as it is eye-clean and does not affect the optical performance of the stone.

SI1 diamonds can be great buys if you are working with a trusted vendor, so you can definitely include them in your search. You can do better than this one, the angle combo is not the best, try to keep pavilion angles 41 degrees or less, between 40.6 - 41.

Thanks! I''ll keep looking! I''ve been looking at this forum for a few years and you guys are great!

Okay...How are the crown and pavilion combo on this stone? I''m trying for the best fire and scintilation and colors in a stone and I''m hoping in will all be represented in possibly this G colored stone. Or should I keep looking in the colorless variety? What are the ideal measurements for a diamond between 1.40 to 1.6o? I keep going for ideal/ ex/ex/ex but the numbers I am choosing don''t seem to match up...Thanks again!

Here are some numbers you can use as a guide to help you find a well cut round.

depth - 60 - 62% - although my personal preference is to allow up to 62.4%
table - 54- 57%
crown angle - 34- 35 degrees
pavilion angle - 40.6- 41 degrees
girdle - avoid extremes, look for thin to slightly thick, thin to medium etc
polish and symmetry - very good and above

note - with crown and pavilion angles at the shallower ends ( CA 34- PA 40.6) and steeper ( CA 35- PA 41) check to make sure these angles complement in that particular diamond - eyeballs, Idealscope, trusted vendor input - check as appropriate!

As the above implies, configurations depend on each other. A little give here can still work with a little take there.

From expert John Pollard.

"With that said, here's a "Cliff's Notes" for staying near Tolkowsky/ideal angles with GIA reports (their numbers are rounded): A crown angle of 34.0, 34.5 or 35.0 is usually safe with a 40.8 pavilion angle. If pavilion angle = 40.6 lean toward a 34.5-35.0 crown. If pavilion angle = 41 lean toward a 34.0-34.5 crown.

GIA "EX" in cut is great at its heart, but it ranges a bit wider than some people prefer, particularly in deep combinations (pavilion > 41 with crown > 35)."

Diamond measurements / proportions are the same in round diamonds whether we are discussing half a carat or 5 carats! The diamond you posted above is better but really an Idealscope image is needed if the vendor can supply one.

Here is a tutorial on Idealscope and ASET images and their use

http://www.highperformancediamonds.com/index.php?page=education-performance

Numbers look good, on the borderline, would need an idealscope image to go further.

For 1.4c, should be around 7.2mm, 1.6c 7.5-7.6mm. Use the pricescope your diamond, and choose the in-house stone option, the spread is the variation from ideal, 0% will be 'ideal'.

Dumb question..but how do I found out about the under the idealscope? Thanks so much!

Don't worry about the dimensions or diameter too much, if you find a well cut diamond the spread or diameter will fall into place. Sorry I am not quite understanding what you mean about the idealscope, do you mean how to obtain an image? An online vendor can sometimes supply an image of a diamond on request.

Great! Thank you! Thanks to your great info, I''ll take my time and keep looking! I appreciate all you efforts and patience as I keep doling out specs...I wish I knew about this forum when we got my e-ring the first time.

Possible yay - again see if you can get an IS. Twinning wisps and surface graining not shown in the comments section is usually not an issue if it is just mentioned under comments, this is the general rule. Only way to know if it is eyeclean or not is to get a good description from the vendor if they can inspect the diamond for you.

Clouds which are marked on the clarity plot which are grade making ( the reason a diamond is an SI2) can be a possible issue as they can dull brilliance, again a trusted vendor's opinion is needed, one who has inspected the diamond. This is not the same as " additional clouds not shown" in the comments section, this is usually ok.

The diamond might be fine but an IS image is really needed for that angle combo.

Hi! It''s been awhile and I have been searching for the Ring. How about these specs? Thanks to anyone in advance for the great advice.

Slightly steep in the pavilion angle for that crown angle. Might be ok given then larger lower facet. Do you have an Idealscope image for that?

What we actually call a steep deep, both crown and pavilion angles aren't a good fit for each other, an Idealscope would be essential to check for light leakage.

Hi! Thanks for getting back to me. I''ll skip this stone then. I am down to 2 diamonds. Should I get either or keep looking. Many thanks again.

here''s the first one:

Measurements: 7.31 - 7.36 x 4.48 mm
Carat Weight: 1.45 carat
Color Grade: D
Clarity Grade: VS2
Cut Grade: Excellent
Proportions:
Depth: 61.1%
Table: 54%
Crown Angle: 34.5°
Crown Height: 16.0%
Pavilion Angle: 40.6°
Pavilion Depth: 42.5%
Star length: 50%
Lower Half: 75%
Girdle: Thin to Medium, Faceted (2.5%)
Culet: None
Finish:
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Fluorescence: Faint

And then here''s the second one:

Measurements: 7.38 - 7.42 x 4.56 mm
Carat Weight: 1.52 carat
Color Grade: F
Clarity Grade: SI1
Cut Grade: Excellent
Proportions:
Depth: 61.6%
Table: 55%
Crown Angle: 34.5°
Crown Height: 15.5%
Pavilion Angle: 40.8°
Pavilion Depth: 43.0%

Again, thanks for your expert opinion. Maybe I''m being to critical but I want the best brilliance, etc....

These two looks good to me.

Both of the above have great potential.
