I need a trench coat!

The clothing designer thread has me thinking - I really need a coat. I mean, winters down here are mild enough that I honestly duck from car to building in a hoodie only. I've been meaning to buy a coat for the last two winters and just haven't done it.

With a proper winter Christmas in store for us, I can't put this off any longer. I want a double breasted, mid-thigh water-repellant trenchie. I don't like the feel of wool, so that's definitely out. I want it to have enough lining that it can be worn in NYC in December, no 'for looks only' sort of coats! I don't mind paying a bit for a quality piece that will last years.

Suggestions? I've looked in a few different online stores, but not much has caught my eye. I did see a Jessica Simpson one that looked nice, but I need an XS - hers only went down to M. ;(

Boden? They are a UK company but they have a large operation in the US. You might have to check out the UK website to get shipping to OZ. www.boden.co.uk...

There is a page on the UK site that says they ship to anywhere in the world, and that postage to Australia is 12 pounds. (About $18 USD.)

Here is a trench coat in three colours including a rather natty one with spots.
http://www.bodenusa.com/en-US/Womens-Coats-Jackets/Coats/WE410/Womens-Autumn-Trench.html?NavGroupID=2

ETA: The website also lists the actual garment measurements, which is helpful when buying from so far away.

It might be a hassle to get a coat from the UK or US, but at least no one will have one like yours!

Actually, if you need a lined one for winter, I'd just go with a Burberry. You'll have it forever.

What about the Burberry lining? Is it substantial? It looks so thin in photos...

I know. I live in the COLD north. I went with the banana republic classic trench and a wool burberry charcottley trench (pic below.) But if you are looking for really warm and waterproof, you'll need to do bespoke.

I would prefer to stay at $500 or less, but if it's classic and will last ages, I can go over.

What I'm hearing though is that I really need wool for warmth? The feel of it makes me cringe a little, not to mention that I'll have to carry a cat de-furrer everywhere with me.

you need a wind stopper. If you had a wind stopper layer UNDER a waterproof trench, you'd be fine, but it would be bulky. Bespoke is at least $2700.

What about the banana republic for spring summer and fall and a north face parkina or brooklyn trench? FUR hoods- SO cute and fashionable!!!

I saw a cute North Face on ebay - http://www.ebay.com/itm/261299923485?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 I would prefer the pseudo-buttoned double breasted look, but this sounds warm and looks classic enough.

I have to stay away from faux fur after reading too many exposes on how many (like 40%?) of them are actually dog fur! :errrr: Dog fur is cheaper in SE Asia than synthetic, so they take them off the dogs that are used in the dog meat industry. ;(

I don't think TNF would use dog fur! :o At least, I hope not!

Have you looked at VS? I typically have never bought clothing from there but I was flipping through their catalog today and they have a few double breasted trench coats that I thought were cute. I think most of them are wool, but perhaps you will like one enough to not care?>??

This isn't exactly a trench, and may be a more casual look than you're going for, but I am in love with this coat. I think it looks sharp for being an outdoorsy harsh weather coat. Upon closer inspection I guess it's more of a rain coat, so maybe that doesn't fit the bill. I currently have a knee length down coat for when its really cold, but I'm thinking of getting this for the rest of the time.

ETA: I really like that Lululemon coat too!

I have a Burberry trench and one from Banana Republic. THere is no comparison, the burberry one is warmer (has removable lining), very well made from beautiful fabric that will last forever. I plan on passing it down to my daughter. I got it for $600 a couple years ago (on sale). My banana republic one is just for looks....it's slim-fitting, loos great belted, but I wore it to Paris on a Sept vacation, and came home with a hole in one pocket, and missing a sleeve strap (it came loose and fell away).

I just thought of another great brand that makes nice trenches. London Fog. Costs about $250 at Macy's. My mom has had one for about 20 years! Still looks great.

Yup! It was a the deal of a lifetime. My mom couldn pass it up, so she bought a size 6 (smallest in that store) which was too big on her petite size 2 frame. When she saw me try it on.....she had to admit it was more my size, so I was the lucky recipient :naughty:

I couldn't afford the trench AND the charcottley, so I went with Banana for the lighter trench, and burberry for the wool trench. I live where it is winter like 9 months a year.

I have a London Fog black raincoat trench coat that has a removable wool lining in a check pattern. It works in warmer weather with the lining removed and is similar to just about any other standard issue trench (it zips in and out very nicely) and works much of the winter here in Chicago-- except January when it is often below zero!

There is one on Nordstrom: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/london-fog-heritage-raglan-sleeve-trench-coat-with-detachable-liner-nordstrom-exclusive/3257640?cm_cat=datafeed&cm_ite=london_fog_heritage_raglan_sleeve_trench_coat_with_detachable_liner_%28nordstrom_exclusive%29:520658&cm_pla=outerwear:women:raincoat&cm_ven=Froogle,Google_Product_Ads&mr:referralID=e178a521-3076-11e3-a8bc-001b2166c62d

Here is their homesite as well.
http://www.londonfog.com/Womens-Fall-Collection/Womens-Fall-Collection.asp

Unfortunately they do not include any pics of the liner online but I imagine either place would answer questions.

London Fog used to have the best raincoats: Affordable, classic, and also available in colors, seasonally. When they closed their retail outlets a few years ago, they said part of the problem was that their coats never wore out.
