what about your first car ? did your parents spoil you with a brand new car ? never forget my first car(in 1976), it was a hand me down from my older brother a 1962 Oldsmobile Holiday, talk about power brakes
23.gif
the first time i drove it i barely tap on the brakes and my head almost went through the windshield.

My first car was a '69 VW bug :) lol It had a hole in the floor behind the driver's seat and you could see the road going by underneath you.
32.gif
!!!

Second car, purchased six months after the above car, was an '89 Nissan Sentra, which was only six months old at the time and so I sort of was the spoiled child! lol (my bug was downright SCARY. . .I cannot believe that my mom even let me get behind the wheel of that contraption and I was relieved to have a car with working window defrosters.)

My second car was a ''78 Dodge Dart with 3 different color fenders.. Got it for $75..

the car was free, the factory rust cost you $150.

was this Maverick the hi pro model with the air gabber hood ? don''t know much about Fords.

Walking down memory lane...

My first was a '72 Chevy Malibu. Green. 2 Door.
It had almost 100K on the odometer when I inherited it from pop.
WOW did it have giddy'up.

Then came the B-mer. ('82 Datsun B210)
Also high mileage...80K or so.
Lasted through college. Barely.
Sold it for $50. No kidding.

My first car (in 1995) was a 1983 VW Rabbit that I paid $300 for. I sold the death-trap two weeks later to a mechanic (only thing my conscience could handle) for $450. Covered one month of insurance, detailing, and the ad I ran in the paper.

Two months later I bought the Miata that I still have today -a red 1993 that I pamper and adore. It only has 63K miles on it. I hope to put collector tags on it someday!

And no, I didn''t get anything for free from my parents. Paid for my school, undergrad and grad, paid for my cars. Been off the parental payroll since the age of 17, and proud of it!

My first car was a 1983 Pontiac 3000 (or was it 2000?). It would eventually be turned into what is now called the Sunfire, although it probably bears no mechanical resemblance anymore except for maybe it''s still 4-cylinder.

It lasted about 3 months before the transmission fell out. I bought it from my girlfriends parents! I sold it for scrap metal. I kept the radio.

My first was a 1984 Toyota Tercel. Baby blue metalic. Everything was manual but I was so proud to have my own set of wheels. The AC was dead and I suffered through the humidity and heat of the Southern belt with it through college. Every pen I left forgotten in the car was melted beyond recognition. The car served me faithfully for another 4 years. When I braked, the car kept on inching forward and it took forever to warm up in the winter. In truth, this brings back fond memories of the days I struggled through college.

78 Plymouth horizon.
4 door hatchback
1.6l 4 banger.
Cream color
I drove it 160+ miles a day to college and back.
Had 275000 miles on it and was going strong when some moron rear ended it.

I miss that car.

''91 Geo Storm bought new when I was 20.
wish I had a car in high school, and wanted to buy a junker with my own money, but my parents said I didn''t need one.
8.gif

my grandpa wanted to give his ''71 Beetle to my brother when he was 15 (1 was 11) after which the plan was that my brother would pass it down to me, but my brother didn''t want the car for some reason, so it was sold.
8.gif
I loved that Beetle.

78 Dogde Aspen. Black. 8 cylinders. Two big dents from tragic deer meets car scenarios. Held at least 8 HS Senior Girls for the majority of 1988, an entire pledge class the winter of 1989 and made several very memorable long range spur of the moment road trips. Loved that car. It had over 230,000 miles on it by the time it just sighed and said, today I will not start.

I also had Horizon, but I think it was the Dodge one (same diff) and it was maroon. It also caught fire, but it did have a sun roof (the aftermarket pop-up kind).

1979 Cheverolet Bonanza full size bed, regular cab, pickup truck. This was a hand-me down from my grandfather to father to me (I received in 1995 @ age 16). It was a baby blue color with plastic bench seating, and an old push button radio(minus the 8-track player). By the time I started driving it the bed had all but rusted out. Truth be told I still miss that truck, because you didn''t have to worry about anything in it.

Thanks, DF. Of course, there was a procession of ''tweeners.

Monte Carlo here, 240SX there.

Thanks for the memories

HI:

This message will totally date me, but between my sisters and I, we shared a ''67 Meteor Montcalm: it was a sage green color and we aptly named it the "green bomb". It was a fab car though, reliable as hell and very roomy so we could pack in all our pals ( front bench seat)....however my middle sister never had a job so she would take the car and always leave the tank on empty for me or my older sister to fill it up!!!!!

cheers

Sharon

Got my license in ''98, car was dad''s old 1989 Volvo 240 DL manual. The Volvo''s still kickin too - my sister drove it after me, and now my brother has it. It''ll probably last till my now 14 yr old bro''s driving too!

My first car was a 1966 Chevy Impala. I paid $300 for it in 1972. It had gunk in the carburator, and a gear shift indicator that was off by one or two notches. That is a very scary combination!
emdgust.gif
One night I was sitting at a light leaving the mall I worked at at the time, when the engine started sputtering. So I put it in what I thought was neutral and gunned the engine. Oh yeah, it wasn''t neutral, it was reverse. I slammed the brakes on as I heard the guy''s horn behind me, just in time to avoid smashing his car. I''m sure he had some choice words for me, but I was so embarrased that I just took off. /idealbb/editor/cute/images/emembarrassed.gif I did get the carburator fixed the next day!!

I got my driver's license in 1980. My parents decided to buy themselves a new car and gave me the old family car- a 1970 Chevy Malibu 2 dr. convertible. Hey John, mine would also scoot!! Aqua blue with a white top that leaked like crazy. Water collected in trunk and back floorboard. When I turned the corner I could hear "SPLOOSH". I also had some interesting looking mushrooms growing in the back seat floorboard!!
6.gif
It had a kickin' 8 track tape player, nothing like hearing " ka-chunk" right in the middle of your favorite song when the track changed!

Later on my dad decided that he wanted a new toy so he bought a 1977 Triumph Spitfire and let me have it provided I let him drive it whenever he wanted. It wasn't too reliable but when it ran-- it ran like scalded ape!!!!! Wheeeeeeee!! I still think about that car and I miss it!!
8.gif

I had the sweetest car.. haha

It was a 86 ford escort two door hatchback. It was sweet. it had all sorts of fading paint and rust, and I had it for about a year before I had to get rid of it because of the holes rusted in the floor and in the exhaust so everytime I''d drive I''d almost get carbon monoxide poisioning. I bought a 94 Geo Tracker after that.. YUCK. I SURE LOVE MY JETTA!!

This is a great thread.
My first car was a 1980 Toyota Corolla; not really "mine" though. I had to share it with my Mother, brother and sister.

The best "first car" was dh and my 1972 dodge dart sport. It had a three speed on the column. I loved flying around in that tank. Once when we were returning home we made the last turn onto our street and the rear axel fell off. It was funny as hell. Here I was about 8 months pregnant sitting in the front seat "Leaning" waaaayyy back and LMAO. Thank goodness we were so close to home!

Pearcrazy, I can so relate.

I got used to the acceleration of that Malibu (as well as a couple of tix VERY early on in my young driving career). Until I got my current speedster nothing seemed fassssssssst like that old Chevy!

8-tracks. Ay caramba. My parents used to "enforce" family vacations on us (much like what you see in the Chevy Chase movies). I have every nuance of every lyric to soundtracks like "Mary Poppins," "The Jungle Book," "Peter Pan" and several other movies of the 70s "family enrichment" genre permanently emblazoned on my synapses via the "miracle" of 8-tracks and long stretches of highway!

You want Fiddler On The Roof lyrics? I got 'em.

(insert nervous tic)
23.gif

Oh John,

"Fiddler on the Roof", I''m laughing my a$$ off but I also feel sorry for the little boy trapped in the back seat!!! As for our family vacations, they usually consisted of 12-14 hour drives to visit one or both of the grandmas. My dad was a heavy smoker, (hell everyone was back in the ''70s) and he always wondered what was wrong with me when I''d get car sick.
14.gif
It never occured to him that perhaps he oughta open a window while dangling those Satan sticks from his lips. In his favor though, he never made us listen to show tunes on that old 8 track.

SUNRISE, SUNSET...........

LOL!!! Ahh yes, the Volkswagon Bug days. Loved them! My Dad decided that with six kids about to learn how to drive, the only way to preserve the family car was to buy a "learners car" that would be handed down from kid to kid. Hence the VW Bug...probably about a 1963....

Mom taught us how to drive - Dad could barely fit in the car and didn''t have the patience for it... Probably couldn''t stand all the grinding gears as we learned the stick shift!

That car was wonderful for kids. I remember taking it out to Jones Beach after big rain storms - they had huge parking lots with nothing (light poles, etc) in the middle - we''d run it up to 30 mph or so and drive right into these huge puddles... did donuts, skids, all sorts of fun stuff. If the water was too deep it would wash right over the whole car! Sometimes it flooded the inside of the car.

If it died, we''d just push it out of the puddle, wait for a bit and then it would either restart, or we would push it to restart it (kid power!).

It lasted thru all six kids, getting in progressively worse condition....

Still remember some great Submarine Race Watching episodes at the beach in trhe Bug....
17.gif

Ahhh, poor Jennifer....I had it rough. My first car was a four year-old Mercedez 300SEL, 4-door, navy blue sedan with taupe leather interior and sun roof. I got my parents'' "hand-me-down" and they got a new one. Those were the days of wine and roses... The car got liquidated along with everything else in their divorce.
7.gif

At 21, I was out on my own and I leased a 1994 GEO Prizm demo model, which was the only thing I seemed to be able to afford at the time. That was truly my first car.

Datson 240Z (Yeah, we got the hand me downs also)

The first car I ever bought was a Nissan Stanza.

Edited to add: At least you didn't get left at a Georgia gas station on your family vacation to Florida.
39.gif
39.gif
. We had a Volvo Station wagon that had the seats facing to the back. I still see my older brother & older sister in that seat laughing their heads off as my parents pulled out from the gas station. Me running after them.

Pearcrazy,

Thanks for the latent sympathy!

Funny you should mention smoking... My dad used to fancy a cigar during those long long drives and 'disgusted mom' insisted he keep his window open. Well, his smoking "style" was to don sunglasses and stogie and cruise, right hand on the wheel, left elbow jauntily resting on his windowsill with his left hand clutching the roof of the car as we rocketed down the interstate.

For years his explanation of "I'm going so fast I have to hold the car's top on" had us hornswaggled.

Websailor... Awesome. Actually, I hornswaggled a few dates myself with the submarine race pretense... Now why do I suspect they WANTED to be 'swaggled?
