Yeah. Same. My DH and I have agreed not to talk about it right now. Just going on with our daily activities.

As you said. It is what it is.

Be like a cat. Happy and content in the moment. Not worrying about the future.

Yup, same here, except I do need to keep an eye out with regard to travelling restrictions to Canada as I am due to visit my folks in May/June this year.

DK :))

Me too. We're all continuing good hygiene practices & being aware of what's around us & what we are being advised to do, which is mostly to be vigilant, clean & NORMAL.

I received an email from my former nephew (he and my niece divorced last year) he lives in Venice, he said it's rampant in Venice and Americans aren't getting the real story. ho hum..

A PSer who I haven't seen in ages is locked down indefinitely in Italy according to an email I received from her yesterday. We aren't getting the whole story.

Is this not communicated in the US?
16million people in Italy are in lockdown.
It's not a secret.
It's widely communicated all over Europe.

Not as much as one might think. The media is more worried about runs on TP at Costco.

I'm also confused, it's pretty widely publicized in Canada that northern Italy is basically entirely under quarantine.

I think people just hear what they want to hear. It's not a conspiracy - 16 million people quarantined I think the "secret" will get out!

Oh, wow. I do gather the impression that things are communicated differently and people are less interested in the numbers in the US.
We get very clear, matter-of-fact news. People generally are concerned but not panicked at all. Information is important in this kind of scenario.

I think it depends on where one gets their news here. A blurb about Italy for 30 seconds on the nightly news doesn't have much of an impact for those who only get their news that way. I feel for people in Italy having to deal with this in this manner.

If anything, our media is sensationalizing the whole thing. So yes, I am extremely in favor of ignoring much of it. I do at least read the headlines but I am far from obsessed with it. Like arkie, I am reading accounts saying it's milder than the flu for the vast majority of people. It's dangerous for the same people for whom the flu is dangerous. I am taking the same precautions that I take during flu season, and the flu is far more prevalent thus far than coronavirus.

The northern Italy quarantine was well publicized here.

HI:

Have a good day!

cheers--Sharon

Hi,

The only place I think there is panic is in the financial markets. I do not regard buying some extra toilet paper as being panicked. In fact the only place that I find talking about the virus is on Pricescope. I do not think, until this morning, that the news is creating panic. I detected the tone in peoples voices were too excited, not calm. But, this really is the first day I was annoyed at the media.

I have prepared as best as I can. The CDC is not going to release the number of new cases any more. That I do not like. Information, for those who want it, should be available. I don't know anyone who is panicked. I live in a Chicago suburb. No one is walking around with masks. This is not Ebola.
I am high risk but as others have said, we all have to live and enjoy life. The future is not ours to see. (Rosemary Clooney).

I went to an art museum in a major city yesterday and took the kiddos to a theatrical production. Half the people walking around were wearing masks. I enjoyed the art and the show, washed my hands as often as was necessary and went home. I hope I don’t get sick, but it’s not like I can do a lot about it other than shut myself inside which I am not willing to do.

I read about it anyway. Better to be informed than worrying needlessly. I need to prepare myself mentally at least. Physically, I can't do anything about it.

I attend a mega-church, with thousands of people and 4 service times every weekend. I went to 11 o'clock service (usually packed) yesterday, and there was significantly less people. I was about 5 minutes late, and still plenty of parking in the "Main" parking lot....I found this strange, and noteworthy because this church has a huge campus, and there is plenty of outdoor seating where you can watch the service without being seated close to anyone. I went about my business, and sat outdoors.

30 seconds?

I dream of 30 seconds.

The BBC are devoting about 80% of their airtime to 'latest Coronavirus Breaking News!!' and it seems to be designed to ramp-up the scaremongering and public fear.

It's that sort of reporting that is causing unnecessary shortages of essentials.

The UK Government are apparently planning for what seems like 80% of the population to get it at the exact same time and the entire health service to be totally swamped, leaving people to die on the floor in corridors

There's some comments online that Italy is in this situation, with doctors having to choose who to treat (the young) and those who might well not survive anyway (the old) but who do we believe?

In this Fake News world it is hard to believe anything nowadays (especially the Climate Change and Positive Discrimination obsessed BBC, who never report anything that might undermine their viewpoint) - but then perhaps that's what they want, because it means they can get on with whatever they want to and people won't believe it either way.

Ugh what a nightmare to deal with. Who do we believe? I understand the reason to downplay would be to keep the panic to a minimum but that horse is out of the barn. Now it's either World War Z or nothing to worry about at all. I'm staying home as much as I can and trying weed through the online crap. I quit watching news on the TV long ago.

this is hearsay from my nephew (former but I love him he's a sweetheart asis his ex, they just couldn't live in the same country, she wanted USA and he wanted Italy).

He says that France and Germany are affected as much as Italy but aren't saying. That the virus is a big deal.

@kipari ??
I don't think anywhere is as hard hit as Italy. Korea has slightly more cases, but even they seem to have it more under control than Italy. France and Germany are reporting only 16% the number of cases as Italy - so your nephew is saying they are lying about it?

He said that our government was lying about how serious the virus is. He said he will probably lose his job for now (he like everyone in Venice is in the hotel biz). He said the virus was more more active in France and Germany than the countries admit to, these were his opinions, he's 46, he was very upset about what is happening in his own country, Italy.

I guess there are conspiring theorists everywhere.

I can assure everyone that France and Germany are nowhere near the situation Italy is in ATM.

I go by the official WHO numbers. European governments have been extremely transparent from the very beginning. Information is key for containing this.

I'm really annoyed by this disregard for facts lately. This just fuels the hysteria of some on the one hand AND on the other hand people completely disregard the dangers. Not cool.

I'm being repetitive, but communication is very clear and logical here:

That sh! the is super contagious. So scientists think a lot of people will get it.

Not everyone will be terribly ill. But those appr. 20% who are probably going to be more severely ill (NOT ONLY AND EXCLUSIVELY THE ELDERLY OR THOSE WITH PREEXISTING CONDITIONS) will need hospital care. Many in ICU. So the strategy of containment is to try and slow down the spread so everyone who needs it has a better chance of benefitting from the treatment they need.

I don't know where the conspiracy is?

And to the hoarding: no, the zombies aren't coming, nobody is saying that either.
BUT one has a chance of needing to self quarantine without prior notice. So having stuff for about 15 days at home (including the famous TP) is not hysteria, just common sense. No need to loot any supermarkets either.
Seems to be working pretty well over here .

Fear-mongering at its finest. More people are dying from the flu than from Coronavirus. But it won’t hurt to be careful: the other day, a stranger next to me on a train asked if she could use my phone. I said no.

Im thinking what else is happening lovelly and international that is newsworthy but we dont get to here about it because of the panic around this virus and the toilet paper situation
the news media is not in the bussiness any more of providing the news of the day in anywhere near an impartial or proffesional way
its all about ratings and sensationalism sells over boring old common sence
i honestly understand now why governments censored the media so heverly durring ww2

Some tips to make your loo paper last longer - this is at least practicle and helpful

Quarantine isn’t the solution.
Plenty of people, even on the Princess Cruise liner, were isolated over 14 days and then after that they came down with the virus.
And even if you quarantine your entire country for even 1 month, it all starts over again the minute people travel to or from another country and bring it back again. Unless you want to completely seal your borders for as long as it takes for there to be no more recorded cases anywhere else in the world, the risk of re infection doesn’t go away. It quickly and easily spread worldwide and will continue to do so until either you get it and develop antibodies or a vaccine is created.
If I was “in charge” I would be throwing every resource behind a vaccine. I would also only isolate those most at risk of severe complications. Let people get it and recover. It’s like an ordinary flu for the vast majority of people. It’s not the Plague or Black Death. Save the health resources For the few that experience complications and to protect those high risk people.
