I have to sell my old OEC and I don’t know where to start

When I upgraded my ring, I promised my husband that I would sell my old OEC to make up for some of the cost. I’ve had my new ring for months and the old ring has been sitting on a ring holder collecting dust. The reason I haven’t gotten to it is because I feel pretty intimidated by the process of selling my old stone. I don’t want to make a mistake.

My stone doesn’t have a cert, just an appraisal. Should I send it to GIA? How does everyone prefer to sell their pre-owned stones? I know there are a few consignment sites, is there one that is preferred by all?

How do I know if I’m missing something in this process...my biggest fear?

House Cat do you have a thread on this OEC? What info can you share about it? Any photos? Who did the appraisal and what is the info you have on the OEC from the appraisal.

The best (IMO) way to sell it is to a fellow PSer and eliminate the middle man to save money on consignment fees. Selling it to someone you "know" and not a stranger and selling it at a better cost for the buyer (than if you were to consign with a vendor) and saving consignment fees on your part. Win win for you and the PSer. If you can. If not then consignment with a trusted PS vendor is a good option.

I bought this OEC many years ago with some help from Upgradable and Coati. I got it on EBay. The appraisal was done at a local jewelry store by a GIA certified appraiser. The diamond is a 1.05 ct I SI1 OEC. The measurements are 6.35 x 4.07. Depth 64% and the table is 50%. Girdle thin to medium. Culet is large. It’s eye clean face up but you can see its one and only flaw through the pavilion. This can be covered with a prong.


I thought when stones didn’t have a cert they went for much less? Is this true?

I need to have it removed from its setting. I was going to take it in today to have this done.

I tried to sell a beautiful transitional cut diamond/platinum ring without a GIA lab report. Diamond was appraised as 1.07 carats G/SI1 and I had no takers at $2900. I sent the ring to a vendor who has removed the diamond and sent it to GIA. He told me it was nearly "impossible" to sell a diamond without a reputable lab report so I think you are wise to send the diamond for a report.

You can always send it to a PS trusted appraiser like David Wolf or Dave Atlas instead of a GIA Cert.

Then list here in preloved and see if a PSer is interested. If priced right it will move faster.

Yes , send it to GIA first. Once you have it laser inscribed and certified, you can consign it.

Agree with everyone else on getting a reputable lab report. Depending on how much you want to get and how soon you want the $$ I suggest considering a consignment with LAD. I consigned a stone with her and it was sold to a buyer in Singapore so her reach is much farther than trying to do it on your own, of course there are fees involved so you have to decide what approach you are most comfortable with. If you decide to consign I suggest selecting a vendor first and see if it makes more sense for them to coordinate the removal of the stone from the setting and getting it a lab report. Lastly, expect it to take some time. I adore old cuts because they each have their own personality and aren’t “cookie cutter”, but that means it sometimes takes longer for them to sell. Your timing is good right now, you can get the lab report and photos and have it listed in time for holiday shopping so that works in your favor. Good luck!

I would look up rings with similar specs - LAD, Jewels by Grace, Old World diamonds and see what they're selling similar stones for. Then price it correctly and put out "feelers" on the pre-loved section of this forum. See if a PS'r would be interested? You never know. Good luck Housecat. Any photos of the stone?
