I really do. But if getting the word out saves one life, or keeps another from harm, it is worth taking the time to post, and you to read.

Be cautious people. Don''t invite today''s strangers into your home. It isn''t worth the risk.

The world is simply not what it used to be.

Oh, how terrible. Always meet in a public place where other people are present and preferably where there''s security and/or a video camera. Not really a good item to sell on CL, though. Lots of loonies on CL. Reminds me of the masseuse who was killed in Boston while responding to a CL ad.

That''s really sad. DH has sold many things on CL, and he NEVER meets at our house! They usually will meet at a McDonalds, or some other public location... For exactly this reason.

that is really sad!

What a horrible thing to happen. My thoughts are with the family.

I''m at a loss for words.

What a terrible story.

I''ve only sold a few things on CL. When I sold an iPod, I met the person at a cafes down the street -- but I''ve also had people to my house to buy larger household things -- rugs and a table. I''m not sure how to sell large things otherwise...? A rational part of me doubts that anyone is going to use buying a rug as a pretext for robbing me, but another rational part of me thinks that we all trick ourselves into thinking that we''ll be able to recognize danger or craziness in time to stop it ~ that we''ll ''sense'' trouble brewing from an odd email or a phone conversation that isn''t quite right. And maybe we ARE able to filter out the ''see it a mile away'' kind of danger--the kind that comes with the big, blinking warnings signs attached (the kind that is so common on Craigslist!) -- but I''m really not sure that anyone can reliably recognize premeditated, mindful, deliberate evil such as this.

Just because the transaction is in a public place, doesn''t necessarily make it safe. I''ve heard about people who meet up and then the buyer will follow the person home and rip them off (then or at another time).

So, keep in mind, if you''re going to sell jewelry or other nicer items on CL, be sure to drive around for a while before going home. Eventually the potential thief will give up (or at least I hope he/she would)!

Goodness this is awful! I was just reading about it so I came to check for a post.

That''s horrible

I always meet somebody at the mall, and then wander the mall for a good half hour looking at different stores. They have NO idea where I parked and I figure that 99.9% of the people are not going to trail me around the mall.

how scary

I never even had a yard sale although we had enough stuff to sell. I was always explaining it by "not willing to spend on coffee for this bunch". Now I think it was this subconscious fear of letting someone unknown close to your house. We live in a nice neighborhood, and people can find anything they need even at a yard sale (like, for example, if you have a dog).

So heartbreaking...

The world has changed so much, and it''s such a shame to see this happening.

If anyone is selling, make sure you do so in a public place...never alone and never at home.

What a tragic story. Bless that poor family for the loss of their father/husband.
