This is just another testimony to the power of PS dust, ladies and gentleman!

I asked for job dust here, which so many of you so kindly provided. And today, I got a call from one of the colleges congratulating me on being selected as an interview candidate for a full-time tenure track teaching position!!!!

Thank you so much for the dust, everyone. And if you have any more to spare--could you send some interview dust my way, too? (Wait--am I addicted to PS dust? I can't seem to get enough.)

I am so very excited to have the opportunity to interview. It was such a long shot, as I've never taught at either of colleges to which I applied, and they both certainly have huge amounts of adjuncts whom they know well and who are, I'm sure, applying for these positions. I really think that your dust helped me get this interview, everyone. Thank you!

Elmorton--If you read this, have any advice for me? Do you remember any questions or themes from your interviews? I have so much experience interviewing people for high school jobs, and ZERO experience interviewing people for college jobs. Thanks so much!

Best of luck, Haven. Any college would be lucky to have such a thoughtful, grounded, and smart person on their faculty!

Ditto to rainwood. Haven is the jewel in anyone''s crown. They appear to be worthy candidates Haven. They had the good sense to select you in the process. We will send lots of glittery dust your way for the interview process.

Haven, that''s awesome!! Congrats!

In terms of interview ?s -

I know this sounds a little strange, but log on to whatever your current college''s web portal is, and start poking around in HR and hiring areas - because hiring is typically done by committee, you can generally find the interview questions that your current college uses, which will likely be pretty similar to the one where you''re interviewing. At the colleges where I''ve worked, behavioral questions are the majority of the interview - "Here''s a tricky situation: how would you solve it?" kind of stuff.

Tips for CC interviews:

Always, always be student-focused. Of course you should should know the theoretical foundations of your pedagogy and explain where that comes from, but if that''s what you dwell on in your interview, the committee likely won''t be impressed, as that''s what green "can''t get hired at the university" candidates often do. Across the board, CC profs tend to believe that a university setting does very little to prepare you for teaching "in the trenches."

Do you need to do a teaching demo? I''ve heard horror stories of people going with really bizarro lessons - go with a lesson you''re comfortable with and that corresponds with a basic principle, but has a twist of your own personality/invention on it.

Be VERY wary of saying anything that stereotypes a CC student or lumps them together as a group. The point is that a person really can''t stereotype the CC classroom, and committees are usually waiting for a candidate to shove a foot in the mouth saying something negative. Be realistic, but don''t stereotype. Talk about a wide variety of experiences.

Know FERPA.

Of course this depends on the type of position (and this is a big duh - I can''t imagine you doing this), but if the job is developmental comp, don''t talk about how you''d rather be teaching lit.

The biggest thing I would do is brainstorm concrete examples of your past teaching experience. How do you manage your classroom? How do you deal with conflict? How do you deal with students who are underprepared academically? How do you deal with students who have outside pressures that affect classroom performance?

And - how do you plan to grow academically and professionally? Know the CC''s stance - some colleges are still in the dark ages and aren''t fans of profs publishing, though most encourage it. Some are heavy into conferences. Where do you see yourself participating? What kind of committee work are you interested in?

Brush up on your college''s enrollment/retainment. I find it really helpful to get my hands on the documents from their last accreditation process (a copy is typically kept in the college library or available online). Get a feel for the college''s weak areas and strong areas by checking out the numbers.

That''s all I can think of for now!! Good luck!!

Sending you TONS of dust, Haven!!! Good luck!!!!

Thank you so much for your support, my PS friends! I can't tell you how much it warmed my heart to log in and see so many warm responses to this thread. I'm all choked up!

El--Sweetie, thank you *so much* for taking the time to share all of that information. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it.
I will be doing a 30-minute taped teaching demo, which is a bit intimidating, isn't it? I'll definitely use something I've taught many times before. Good advice!
I'm going to heed everything you advised, in fact I just pasted your post into a Word doc so I can print it out!
I've just asked my current dept chair to do a mock interview with me, so hopefully that will ease my nerves a bit.

It's strange to think, but I've never actually had a *real* interview for a teaching position. I obtained my adjunct instructor position after a very informal meeting with my former dept chair, and I obtained my HS teaching position without an interview at all--my former principal called me (I had student taught there, and taught summer school, and he became a mentor to me) and said "Lori, we have a job for you, and I'd like to send you to grad school to become a reading specialist!" And then I had a fake interview with two friends from the English dept, who were the lead teachers at the time, during which we just caught up on the last few months of each others' lives.

I did sit on five interview panels while teaching HS--two for English teachers, two for reading specialists, and one for our dept chair. They were each so different, though. The tone of the interviews was set completely by the interview panel, as we each asked our own questions.

AHHH. Okay, thinking about my lack of real interviewing experience is making me a bit shaky. I'm going to go follow El's advice now and scavenge for info about the college.

Thanks so much everyone. Sorry about my ramblings, here, I'm still in a bit of shock that I made it to the interview stage at all.

Congratulations! I hope you get it!

Oh good luck Haven!!! You''ll do fabulously
