I finally bought my diamond and ordered my rings, but why are the sizes different?

Hi everyone! We finally chose the diamond and e-ring setting and wedding band... why did my jeweler tell me to size my wedding band a quarter size larger than my e-ring? He said if I have a problem with it, I can always get it resized. My e-ring will be a 5 3/4, and my wedding ring a 6 (the size of my finger is 5 3/4). Why is this?

I don't know specifically, but I have found that I have different size rings, depending on the style. You don't want a band to look tight, so a little bigger is better, and spinning around isn't an issue usually. A solitare needs to sit tighter so that it doesn't spin as much. I recently had a ring sized, and they kept mentioning that it is "open inside" so the smaller size was better. I have no idea what that was about. Talk to your jeweler and ask him why he is suggesting this. I have also had band rings come out too small looks-wise, even tho the ring sizer ring fit fine.

Is your wedding ring wider than your e-ring? If a band is wide, it is harder to get over the knuckle. My 8mm wedding ring is a size 5 1/2 but my new 2mm anniversary band is a 5.

My jeweler did the same thing with my wedding band. She said the wedding band needs to be slightly larger because the flesh of your finger is getting squished up a little (for lack of a better term) by the e-ring. Take a look at your finger with your e-ring on, can you see how it's a little bit fleshy around the ring? This happens even if your e-ring is perfectly sized and it's not an indication that your e-ring is too small.

I normally wear a 5.75-6 in narrower band rings. My new ring has a 7mm, half round shank of heavy platinum. I went 6.25 on it to allow for swelling. Works fine 99% ot the time. Some times when I am cold, the ring is a tad loose, but the rest of the time, it's just fine.

So maybe shank width??

hmmm, those are all good reasons. Actually, the wedding ring is a tad bid less wide than the e-ring. I will have to see when I pick them up how they fit. Thanks again!

Thanks for the good thread sunseeker!

This explains my recent sizing confusions.

When we shopped for the e-ring, it was really cold and size 6 was fitting every time.

I've been wearing a size 7 promise ring which I knew was too big, though OK on my right hand.

Recently, I had the promise ring sized from a 7 to a 6 and after just a couple days it was waaaaayyy too tight so I went back and had it sized back up to a 6.5.

As it happens, the increase in size happened at the same time the weather got warmer.

Wow, I was thinking about getting an eternity wedding band but I wonder if it is tricky to get the right size when stones go all the way around.

You'd never be able to size it up or down, would you?
