I found a very nice stone today, and NO, it''s not at Jared''s. It is from a reputable local dealer.

Here are the specs:

.49 ct
E color
VS2 clarity
Depth: 61.4%
Table: 55%
Crown Angle: 33.1
Pavillion Angle: 41.4
Culet: Very Small
Florescence: None
Polish: EX
Symmetry: VG

5.12 x 5.08 x 3.13mm

EGL USA Certified Ideal Cut

Now, this stone in person looks very good to me. Nice symmetry and nice fire.

I come home w/ the specs and run them through the HCA here and only get VG on everything. A score over 3.

Help me learn what I am missing.

Oh, and a last note... the dealer is offering this to me for $2000 out the door. Deal or no deal?

Thanks.

makes one wonder.

hca predicts what angles (crown and pavilion) work together with the table and depth for good performance.
good angles working together are key to making a well performing (sparkley) diamond.

yours didn't score well because nothing is going to work well, perfomance wise, with a 41.4 pavilion

Two thousand *American* dollars? Um... No.

Why don''t you post some parameters to work with (color, clarity, budget) and the good folks here on PS will do their best to help you.

hmm ok then.

Thanks for your input everyone. I thought I had found a nice stone. Guess I''ll continue my search.

The jeweler that I plan on buying the setting and w. band from is getting a .62ct E VS2 for me to look at tomorrow. They said they price right at the current RAP price which would make the stone around $2300. Does that sound like a better deal, assuming of course the numbers on it look more ideal?

Most diamonds will look great under the store''s lights. The HCA''s purpose is to reject known poor performers so I would call this diamond a reject.

Sorry I''m late to this part.

Better...

you have to know certification makes a difference. EGL...USA...is acceptable...but just. This one above...we don''t know who provided the certification.

We like to stand by local jewelers...but it''s frequently hard to do so.

Compared to your first option...this is one you could consider...albeit from an away vendor. Notice the certification from AGS is most desirable...and with measurement that is understood providing 0 for light performance. Typically...when available...this analysis will trump HCA, too, because it is based on having the diamond in hand...and without the need to impute the info to the diamond.

But...using other certification...the HCA should help. I''m a bit puzzled by your title comments. You know...most diamonds are pretty. The variance may even be tricky. But...if you want to optimize...compare whatever you''re considering to one that is considered either primo by HCA, AGS, etc. See if YOU think there''s a difference.

Regards,
