Hi all! I am new to pricescope, although I have been reading through the forums for a few weeks now and getting some great info!

I have decided that I want a palladium setting for my engagement ring, and my boyfriend wants to buy it soon while he has the money even though it will be months before he actually gives me the ring, but he is concerned about the patina that we have been reading about that develops on palladium. I have read some posts that say patina is a film on the surface of the ring due to exposure, and some that say it is a bunch of tiny scratches. So my question is this - What exactly is patina on palladium, and if my boyfriend buys the ring but I don''t wear it (i.e. he keeps it in its box for a few months until he proposes), will it develop this patina, or will it stay in its original shiny state? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

i think it will stay shiny until you start wearing it =)

Patina is the tiny surface scratches that you get from wearing the ring. Some people love it, others hate it. Your ring will retain its shine until you wear it, and you can always have the ring repolished when it developes a patina if you are in the "don''t like it" catagory.

Thank you all for the fast replies! Also, the reason I decided on palladium was because I have read a lot of good things about it on price scope, more good than bad actually, so I''m hoping that I''ll be one of the people with a great experience with palladium instead of one of the people who hate it ! Platinum is out of my price range, and white gold just seemed like too much hassle with the rhodium re-plating. I don''t normally wear rings so I''m not sure if I am allergic to any metals... but I have very sensitive skin so I figured hypoallergenic would be the way to go just in case!

Try and see if they have WG/Pd alloy for the setting, heard those are not allergenic and white enough not to require rhodium plating. Might be a better choice?
