I was looking on PS for a diamond and saw engagement rings direct. they showed an I Vs1 and it said, something like, may show slight color not appropriate for white gold or platinum. I wanted platinum....should I go up in color and down in clarity to keep it in budget?

I'd look for a better balance between color and clarity...
You'll pay for something you can't see w/ VS 1. The I could face up very white if it's well cut; however, I'd consider dropping the clarity to VS2 or SI1 and upping the color to G or H...I have an H SI1 and it's incredibly white and sparkly...what you really need to concentrate on is the cut...for basics -- look for depth around 60-62 and table 55-57. Other people around here are experts on crown and pav. angles, so I'm sure they'll help you if you post more info when you have those specs...good luck in your search, it's fun and can become quite an obsesssion in your quest for the perfect stone. Post what size and shape you're looking for and you'll get tons of helpful responses...kl

Thanks, looking for a round brilliant, ideal/H&A, no inclusions near the table, could go SI1, and would prefer color of G or so. Budget is $5500-6000

It really depends on the quality of the make. Well cut diamonds visually appear very white and bright for the color grade. I have a 1.25 carat J color diamond set in plat and it faces up beautifully. There are pics in this thread:

Many people have bought I color diamonds, set in white metal, and been very pleased with the result. You should look thru the Eye Candy folder in the Show Me The Ring Forum:

You see several I and J color diamond rings with links to the original threads for more pics.

Clarity costs more than color. Dropping clarity to the SI level will definitely help you maximize your budget.

PQ, I continue to admire your ring. It is so gorgeous!

And I agree--lose the VS1 and either get the color you want and/or a bigger stone with a great cut.

I have an I from GOG and no one believes me that it is an I. I can't see any color at all.

Richard Sherwood did call it an H though, but maybe it's not so I-ish?
