My boyfriend and i picked out a diamond and i thought it was perfect but i am now worried. It is a 3.01 carat H SI2. However, a girlfriend of mine was commenting on his sister''s ring saying she could see yellow in it. I don''t think hers was less than H so now i am worried mine might not be as good as i originally thought....PLEASE HELP (if you can :))

Well we can''t tell you ANYTHING based on what you have told us.

Does it have a certificate? If not, it is likely that it might be a few color grades less than you thought.

Best bet is to take it to an independent (read:not a jewelry store) appraiser and have it appraised.

Sorry, i am new to this :)
It is GIA

also, we did this with and independent jeweler

give us more info please such as depth%, table%, cutlet, pavillion and cutlet % and any other measurements you have along w/clarity and color.

Do you have the GIA no? With that we can look up the report from the GIA website.

Hi again!

Firstly if it is a done deal, congrats on your diamond and I wouldn't worry too much. lovely size! An H colour is a very respectable colour grade, which lab graded the diamond? Was it GIA or AGS? But the main thing is that you love it, various things can affect how a diamond looks and especially the colour grade. We have some larger diamonds here with an H colour grade which are plenty white, so I wouldn't let that remark worry you.

ETA - as you posted it is a GIA graded diamond, then it will be accurate and you don't have a thing to worry about!! We could get into the nuts and bolts of cut if you want, but it sounds to me that you want reassurance more than anything. I will say an H is a lovely middleground colourgrade which will not look yellow, but a softer white to a D or E etc.

If it is indeed a done deal there is little point in my opinion of us going into the cut proportions as this stuff takes time to learn and some remarks may cast further doubt on the quality of your diamond, which wouldn't serve any good purpose. I wouldn't sweat it as WMW says and enjoy it!

Don''t sweat it, enjoy your ring. GIA H is a good color. You bought it for your enjoyment and not to please your girlfriend right?

I apologize, I don''t have all that info. however, i can try to get it :)

it is not done yet, that is why i was inquiring a little further :)
Thank you!
GIA
Thank you for your help and honesty.
It is so nervewraking ya know. it is such a huge purchase, yet you really dont know that much.

This is true, I just wanted to understand a little better.

Yes, it is GIA.
I understand it some, but i dont know all the semantics of this particular one.
One thing i do know is that it is a 1.4 ratio and i think with oval 1.5 is the best...is that right?

I understand. We are mainly cut quality fans here and like to analyse numbers and images as cut is what makes a diamond beautiful! You can post the proportions of the diamond and we can offer opinions, but overall if it gives you joy each time you look at it, then it sounds as if you have found your diamond! If you give us an idea of budget we could perhaps find some other options just for comparison's sake.

Ok an oval ( I assumed it was a round) is a different kettle of fish and fancy cuts are best evaluated by the eyes. Length to width ratio is a matter of preference, not really a case of one being better than another. I will link a page shortly that I think you might find helpful too.

Good point Lorelei
thank you for your help!

You are very nice and helpful!
The max was $20,000

Thank you that was interesting. I feel like i shoud have went for a smaller stone :)
one last thing, SI2...do you feel you can see inclusions with the naked eye?

Gosh - that depends on so many things! Clarity grading is done face up and the grade is given depending on colour, location, type, size and visibility of the inclusion/s in very basic terms. Generally the larger you go, the more chance there is of being able to see something in the way of inclusions, BUT there are larger diamonds out there which are graded SI2 which are eyeclean. Some shapes can show inclusions more than others too. It also depends on the viewer's eyesight and the ambient lighting, but as this is such a huge subject, I will post you another thread for you to read. Also you will see the industry definitions of eyeclean in this llink.

Here you go - Clarity - eyecleanliness definitions and taste

I know i am being very general, so i really appreciate your insight.
thanks again!
Hopefully next time i post i will have more info (and the ring :))

Wow. A three carat OVAL???? That sucker must be HUGE!!!! You probably already know this but ovals "face up" MUCH larger than all other shapes except maybe pears.

As to any hint of tint ... the larger a stone is the greater the chance of seeing any body color that''s present. I have a GIA "H" colored asscher ... and *I* don''t see any color in it, at all, ever - but it''s 1/2 the size of your stone. Have no idea how much, if any, tint I''d see if there was THAT MUCH DIAMOND (though i''d be keen to find out

)

As to buying to please other people ... listen, people will CLAIM to be able to see tint in "F" color stones, even "D"s. Some people just like to be critical. You just can''t please everyone -- not to mention combat latent jealousy & slanted judgements etc etc. I''d say to anyone that the best bet is to please yourself/your mate.

I was glad to help you and I hope give you some reassurance on what I am sure, is a stunning diamond! Above all, especially with fancy shapes, the wearer''s own preferences and what they find beautiful is the most important, rather than anything else. Congratulations too!
