Promising from the numbers. Ask them for the full sarin report and not the summarize form.

And here is my response from BN... AND I QUOTE!!!!

***
I'm sorry to say that we are not able to provide Idealscope or Saring reports for our diamonds. This is primarily because the majority of the vault locations that we store our diamonds at do not have these machines on site, but also because we do not believe that the majority of our customers would be able to properly interpret these kinds of reports. A cut appraisal machine is only as good as its calibration, and unless these machines are meticulously calibrated, they will not produce accurate results. Even when perfectly calibrated, the same diamond run through the same machine three times will produce three different results. (This is an experiment I would recommend trying if you ever happen to be at a jewelry store with one of these machines.)
***

What validity is there to this statement. Should I be concerned at the faith we put into reports that have such fickle results? Or is this a line trying to get me to not care about detailed information that could really give me the true details of my potential diamond.

I will add, with further poking and prodding, BN is requesting the Sarin report. They said they only offer the H&A images with their signature ideal line. This one is only ideal. (apparently not ideal enough to be special)

I also had BN put this diamond on reserve!

I may be nearing the end of my hunt!!!!!!!!!

The signature line is the only stones BN actually owns. Other stones are virtual inventories own by other vendors, jewelers. Of course, not all stores will have the equipment, BN is making it sounds like the stones are actually in a vault somewhere. sarin is true, calibration of the machine and trained personnel is required to operate it. IS is easy to intepret, just the equipment and training, BN probably would not want to supply all jewelers that put up their virtual stones on BN with these.

The Signature Ideal''s H&A image is also not taken in the traditional lighting thus not that easy to interpret.

So if this is in a virtual inventory, then technically I may be able to find this EXACT diamond on other sights? I was under the impression that BNs inventory was required to be only in their possession. Meaning that looking for that EXACT diamond from another dealer was useless as they would not have it.

That is correct. Several online vendors that are recommended on PS would have the same diamond availability and a several hundred swing either way on price. I personally liked James Allen and Union Diamond for their service.

The reports from the BN sigs are also hard to read. I was told that they are laminated, but that is not an excuse for GCal to have the same low res copy on their site. In particular it is hard to gauge hearts, it seemed like the most important parts were fuzzed out. I have one cert posted in my diamond comparison thread if you don’t feel like searching for one.

While their selection is very nice, and I am sure a lot of the BN sigs are great diamonds it was hard for me to justify purchasing a diamond from them due to the lack of info. Every one of the Pricewatch venders that I looked at offered a much broader scope of information that I feel is important for online transactions of this magnitude.

I have been doing a lot of searching and learning. Still have not made a decision and am hoping everyone is patient with me while I get better at this.

I decided to take everyones opinion and move my color down to G. I am taking clarity to VS2, but SI1 is still fine as long as its eye clean. (and yes, i have read from top to bottom the eye clean report twice now).

Here is a diamond I am currently interested in to purchase. I have searched JA, GOG, WF, UD, Niceice and nothing compares in price and from the GIA plot, optimization of clarity in my favor while maintaining its set GIA clarity rating.

Price: $7,088
Bank wire price:$6,982
Carat weight:1.20
Cut:Ideal
Color: G
Clarity:VS2
Price per carat:$5,907
Depth %:61.4%
Table %:57%
Symmetry:Excellent
Polish:Excellent
Girdle:Medium
Culet:None
Fluorescence:Medium Blue
Measurements:6.82 x 6.83 x 4.19 mm

Here is a link to GIA report. http://img.bluenile.com/is/image/certs/?src={/2080/GIA1112151242_zoom.jpeg}&fmt=pdf

I think they can send me a Sarin report. Will this be enough to make a happy decision and be satisfied. I leverage the fine people of this forum as my handle on satisfied. I feel everyone here is quite unbiased and honest in giving me good help with no motive. Although maybe some are not, so I go with the overall voice of the forum

The diamond has definite potential from the link, however BN will not send a Sarin report as you are now aware.

No thats not true. I said I was very interested in the diamond and they put in a request to have a sarin report generated for this specific diamond on my behalf because I was so interested. I just had to push them to do it since they only give sarin reports on their signature line and this is one step below that. I should be getting the sarin report today. In the meantime, i am searching the PS vendors. It seems at my carat size, there is not nearly as much stock as at the just under 1s and 1 carats. I tend to only find 10-20 at any given place and most are not meeting my high color wants.

So how do I find this exact diamond and who actually owns it so I can get the best deal?

Use the Diamond Prices search at the top of the page. Enter your info, use the "Search All" and then you can identify the diamond by its measurements (use the additional search screen at the bottom of the results page to narrow by depth and table). If it is virtual inventory, it is owned by a cutter or wholesaler and you won't find who owns it, you will just find which vendors have access to sell it.

Please let us know if this request for a Sarin report means Blue Nile actually send you one, I would be very interested to find out.

I hope as well. So far nothing.

In the mean time, I have continued the hunt.

The HCA score on these 2 are GREAT!!! The price is right, the GIA looks decent. But thats it, I have no other info. Does Solomon Bros offer more info other than this???

I will take a look at your selections for you, I don't think SB's offer Idealscope etc, but you could ask them.

Both look good but the first one in particular is definitely worth further investigation, it has excellent numbers. Check it is eyeclean also and whether the feather is any kind of durability issue due to its location, although you can't tell much from the clarity plot and it is unlikely the feather will pose a problem it is best to check.

BN responded. No Sarin report for me.

You were right, they didnt do it for me

I keep finding diamonds I like but always from places that cant give me the high level detailed info like sarin and IS etc.

Please, one more diamond to look at. This one I am posting is the one I found the first time I was looking but it must have been put on reserve. Now it is back on the listing, I have reserved it and is on the top of my list, please give opinions. Nice HCA score!

Thanks for letting us know, unfortunately I thought that would be the case.

Yes this diamond looks promising from the info given, with that angle combo an Idealscope image is always useful but again we won't be able to get one from BN. As always check it is eyeclean by asking your BN rep.

I have put it on hold and requested an evaluation of clarity.

I asked for their specific definition of "eye clean" and their response...

****
An eye-clean diamond is a stone that has no visible inclusions when viewing the diamond from the top down as you would once the diamond is set. An eye-clean diamond may have inclusions visible from the side, but these would only be visible to someone regularly viewing the diamond from the side, not the casual observer. This is assessed from 8 inches from the eye.
****

Response will be to me tomorrow about clarity evaluation, so they say.

That looks GREAT! I cant find it on BN though. I have a feeling some lurker may have poached it.

I had a look and couldn''t find it either, give BN a call.

I did. Its no longer available. That was a REALLY nice diamond too.

Wow, what an interesting run of events today.

The diamond I posted about and had reserved...
http://img.bluenile.com/is/image/certs/?src={/2080/GIA1112151242_zoom.jpeg}&fmt=pdf
but then could not find today was released by accident and then they reserved it again but didnt know my name... so they figured if the original reserver wanted it, they would call in asking about it. Well when I called in, the person didnt know all of this and said it was not available and could not give me any more details for privacy issues. LOL
I got a call from BN and they were like, we found out this diamond was reserved for you.. blah blah blah, now they have it saved for me again until tomorrow afternoon.

Anyways, I have 2 diamonds on reserve. I am about 99% to pull the trigger on the above mentioned one. God knows my girl friend may just buy herself one at how long its taking me to find something and make up my mind.

I guess out of curiosity, once I get a diamond, what am I supposed to do with it to make sure I am getting what I paid for? Can a jeweler test it for me or read the inscription on the side to make sure it matches the GIA report? Can I take it to somewhere to get an IS image on it? Is that expensive? Its a little unnerving spending so much money for something so tiny.

Ditto Jet and if one of the diamonds is the one DS found, thats a really promising stone!

I just bought a beautiful AGS0 diamond on Union Diamond, HCA 1, Union signature cut. They do ideal scopes, and will be cheaper than BN. I also got H&A pics of my diamond, even though it wasn''t even advertised as a H&A diamond.

Well, the hunt is over. The deed is done. The money is spent!

Thanks everyone for guiding me in the right direction and offering some great advice on color vs clarity trade offs. I will be following up my purchase with a PS appraisal right away and then start finalizing my plans on actually giving the ring.

The ring I finally ended up with, which seems to be the crowd favorite is the following.

Carat weight:1.20
Cut:Ideal
Color:G
Clarity:VS2
Depth %:61.4%
Table %:57%
Symmetry:Excellent
Polish:Excellent
Girdle:Medium
Culet:None
Fluorescence:Medium Blue
Measurements:6.82 x 6.83 x 4.19 mm

GIA Report in this link

Again, many thanks to everyone!

I will add some pictures once I get it next week.

Good luck. :)
