I am helping DD move into her new apartment this weekend....

I am so happy for her. BUT I have LOVED having her home this summer. I pack her lunches, do her laundry, make her bed... She emails me and asks can I do this and that...

Calling doc's offices as she can't and the like. She said I really need to hire you as my assistant. I said, oh puhleease you can't afford me, LOL!!!

I am fine with her moving out that's not it.

What things do I need to be mindful of. I bought all the cleaning supplies, TP cookware, appliances...

It's a short drive 20 mins, so no biggie if we forget anything..

All you youngins that have moved, what did you forget??

Aw, you are so sweet and your daughter is so lucky! I hope it's a smooth transition for both of you!

Maybe instead of worrying now about what you'll forget, offer to do a walmart/target/grocery store run while things are being unpacked? When I moved into my first apartment, that was the biggest help my mom could give...I really wanted a lot of things done 'my way' so I wanted to unpack the kitchen, hang up the shower curtains, etc., so I felt bad when my mom offered and I said no. But when I realized I needed shelf paper and lightbulbs, it was awesome that she went to get that stuff, as well as the first trip for groceries.

Not huge as in she has lived on her own for the past 4 years. BUT huge that she is a working gal, on her own... Such an exciting time.

Kaliegh, how exciting! I remember when I moved into the city when I started my first job...how time does fly. I think the idea of a Target run a day or two after she gets settled on is great (I don't know where she's living, but if she doesn't have a car there, it's REALLY helpful -- speaking from experience!). And even if it's something she can do on her own, still nice to have some moral support Good luck!

Just wanted to give youa big huge HUG honey. You are a great mom.

I remember my mom stocked my apartment from costco. The best gift ever was the trash bags (2000 for a buck at costco), ziploc storage bags. A HUGE pack of individually wrapped chicken breasts for the freezer. And all the paper products (paper towels, toilet paper, etc.) at first I was freaked at having to store it all, but once it was all there I was thankful everyday for the family sized 'basics'. Can't be beat. Oh, and clorox wipes and clorox clean up. Best cleaning stuff ever.

Wow, Kaleigh. You are such an awesome mom. Would you like to adopt me?

I don't handle moving very well. The emotional upheaval almost always leads to an outbreak of hives. Seeing as you're such a cool mom, I'm sure your daughter is not quite as nuts as I am, so she probably handles it better than I do. However, in any situation, moving can be incredibly stressful...

During this time of adjustment, perhaps she'd like some comfort food in the form of home cooked meals? I'm sure she has one or two favourites that can be frozen or can live in the fridge for a day or so while she settles in. I know when I move, cooking is usually one of the last things I am able to do, and having a nutritious, made-with-love alternative to take-aways would be awesome!

Hope you girls have fun with the move, and remember, if you get empty nest syndrome and would like a new daughter, I'm right here!

Aw, sweet!!

What things do I forget when moving...I always forget my stack of cookbooks. Annoying when I move far away, because they're a hassle to transport. I also generally forget to bring my "file" - all my important letters, bank statements etc. Real PITA when trying to open a bank account in a new country! I have had to order a new birth cert three times, because I seem to misplace it every time I move. I have since found them all What else...oh, swimsuits! Don't know what it is about swimsuits, but I never remember to pack them. And my hairdryer is constantly being left behind. If she's only 20 mins away, I'm sure she can leave bulky things like sports equipment and whatnot at home? Much easier...hauling skiis and surfboards around is annoying and expensive. Actually, if you guys don't mind, the more she can leave in storage at home the better. Things like towels/sheets/cutlery etc she will probably be getting herself? She may want things like a coffeemaker/frying pan/saucepan/kettle/toaster etc to get her started if they're going spare.

Kaleigh you remind me of my mom! She was always so excited to help me move! We are both very organized so we had all the essentials. The main thing is just getting into the apartment and figuring out what she needs.. Does she need a specific sized trash can to fit in the kitchen? A bookshelf for that corner over there? A rug or curtains? Some of the stuff may just be decorating that she can do later but some of it may be thing she needs to actually get all of her stuff unpacked. I always moved everything in, unpacked what I could, then made a Target run to get the rest. Oh you can never have enough trash bags.. There is always trash from packing stuff.. Kaleigh, big mom hug to you! It is posts like your that help me find the strength to let DD go away to college next year. I don't know if it is her moving away or me not having her around that bothers me the most. We are very close,but even now she is not home much because of job, volunteering , boyfriend, etc. that I am getting somewhat used to the idea. Maybe this is the year to re-invent myself and to finally do what I have been procrastinating for the past 17 years. You are a great mom!!!

When I first moved out I forgot a strainer for noodles!! When my niece graduated high school and was getting ready to move into her first apartment DH and I sent her a really nice strainer and a family sized pack of macaroni and cheese haha! She loved it and said she had forgotten to put a noodle strainer on her list! HAH! I knew it would happen!!

I am right there with you as mine is the same age, but she move to another state! I sure miss her! She is learning to live on less and anything she forgot she picks up at walmart. ( now that is a new one, she hates walmart) Can't wait to go visit her in December! Good luck with the big move!

My DD has been on her own for quite some time, since '06 (shared an apt. with a girlfriend) but I always helped her pack when they moved and of course made those Target runs. Have to agree, buying the cleaning supplies, stocking up on groceries, buying some gas cards, envelopes and stamps, anything to help out. The garbage bag idea is awesome, those things get expensive!! And so is laundry detergent! I still buy DD little things here and there, she is now engaged and living with her fiance. Just last night bought her a pair of boots. They might be outta the house, but that doesn't mean we don't help.

Your suggestions have been great. I will do a Target run.. I have her all set with trash bags, paper towels, laundry detergent, stain spray remover, cascade, dryer sheets etc......

BUT I forgot hammer and nails. Like duh!!! So will buy all that tomorrow.

And I haven't seen the place yet. It's a house, she will be sharing with 2 other friends from Penn. So once I see the spaces, it will be easy to go and run to get what else she needs. Like I don't want to buy stuff that won't fit??

Please keep the ideas coming, they are really helpful!!!

She was packing and got so sad. She said I feel like this is so permanent.. I said oh nooooooo. You have your room here, it's here for you always... Plus her job is 5 mins from our house, she's doing the reverse commute. She wants to be in the city with her friends, and living around here would be a snooze fest...

a laundry basket full of basics would be a nice send off. detergent, fabric softener, cleaning supplies, a set of white sheets and towels (always good to have extra, i love crisp white sheets and towels, they match everything and can be bleached if necessary), aspirin/motrin, bandaids, cough/cold medicine, bug spray, extra body wash/soap, etc.

I still have the tool box that my dad gave me when I got my first apartment years ago. You mentioned forgetting a hammer and nails, so what about getting a tool box with those things included?

I am very proud of her. She's only worked for one month and just got a promotion today... If you met her, you would love her, she's a really sweet and lovely woman.

Don't be sad for me... Be sad for me if she and the BF decide to move to CA!!!! A very real possiblity in two years... SF here I come.

So, you have a spare room? When can I move in? You have all the facilities I am looking for.

Seriously, I know how you feel. I've moved Baby Gailey a couple of times now. Likely you have not forgotten anything for the initial move, but I find a Costco run now and again helps enormously as Baby G doesn't drive and as he lives in a downtown apartment, within two blocks of where he works, doesn't feel he needs to. Well, why would he when he's got Mum to haul anything he needs!

On the odd occasion when he comes home, he seems to leave with a stack of toilet rolls and Bounty, along with half the contents of my freezer. Cleaning supplies seem to last an inordinate amount of time, but given that Baby Kaleigh is a girl, you probably won't find that.

Does Baby Kaleigh have an iron and ironing board? That might be a good idea.

I have to move to the other side of the country by the end of the year and I don't know how I will stand it, we have never been that far apart.
