My girlfriend is stuck on an out of the box "designer ring" with a cushion cut diamond. I am told it is a modern cut diamond. The jewler is trying to find a stone which fits my price range and fits the ring but he is having a really hard time trying to find the right cushion cut. I am wondering if the cushion cut is an outdated stone that no one really wants or desires anymore.

They are less expensive but harder to find? I don''t want to buy a ring with an old "grandma" stone. HELP!

Cushion cuts seem to back into favor and there are modern cutters producting new cushion cuts. However, they are certainly far from the most common shape, so that's probably why you're having a hard time finding them. If you do a search on the Pricescope homepage you'll pull up a few.

The old cushion cut were... old mine cut. Modern cushions have the same outline (a rectangle or square with rounded corners, basically) but not much else in common with the old ones.

Both old and new cut models are done today and are very en vogue

You definitely cannot go wrong. Old miner cut diamonds are usually less expensiver per carat than modern models - the typical smaller size for a given weight of the older model contributes to this pricing but otherwise it is just so happens.

There are quite a few version of "cushion cut" around - from the old model to H&A! Prices go from about 10% discount from the price of a round brilliant of same weight to branded premium shapes.

The pictures of old mine (OMC) above are not exactly flattering - the cut can be very brilliant when proportions are just so (as much as modern ovals, as THIS one shows) and they do have an unmistakeable flavor in jewelry (another Link to OMC rings).

The Criss cushion is used by the Tiffany Legacy rings you may have heard about, as far as I know.

Okay: do not fear. I'm completely your girl--as everyone on this board can attest, I have been on an obsessive quest for the perfect cushion for six weeks now. I would be thrilled to help you in any way I can. AND, in my humble opinion, your GF has fabulous taste--they're not grandma stones, they're classy and timeless and GORGEOUS!

(i'm 26.)

so first off, where did you see the designer ring that she loves, approx what carat was it, and what type of setting was it? (i've probably seen it.)

I'm with Reena -- cushions are so beautiful and timeless. They have a vintage look but in a more modern setting will look classic. My BF is currently searching for a cushion for my e-ring (coming soon I hope!!!!!!) and I think they are unique, but classic. While there are cushion cut diamonds that are antiques, there are also now stones that are modern stones cut in the old way. I find the history of the cut fascinating.

Your girlfriend must have great taste!
