ok so i just upgraded my 1.7 carat E color diamond to a 3.22 carat H color diamond i was so excited because ive always wanted a 3 carat and i knew h was near colorless but to me in the store it looked good and it is certified by the IGI ......so ive had this 3 carat for a little while now and yes i see hints of yellow here and there and i started to get a little concerned and then when i went to show my friend the first thing she said when i showed her was "COOL ITS YELLOW"

Have you had an independent appraisal done on your stone / ring? It might be worth it to find out exactly what it is that you have. I doubt that even in a 3 carat there would be *that* much color visible in an H. At least then you could know for sure what you''re dealing with...

maybe your friend is extremely color sensitive! also, i''ve heard that color is more discernible in larger carat weight stones...

the more important question is: do YOU think it looks too yellow? i have an F and G, and sometimes i think that my G is more tinted than i''d expect, considering my F looks blindingly white.

you might want to check the cut of your new stone, too, since less well-cut stones tend to show their color more. you mention that it has an IGI cert. would you mind sharing the numbers with us (and photos)?

would you be able to return the stone, or is that not an option anymore? i''m not sure what you could do to make it look more colorless. maybe a yellow or rose gold setting? i''ve seen I-J stones on PS in platinum settings that look absolutely amazing, so i''m not sure you should give up your setting just yet.

yes, definitely get an independent appraisal. the IGI cert might be a few color grades off, too. and i think the cut might have a lot to do with the appearance of color...

IGI, ''nuff said. I bet it''s closer to J-K. Either that or your friend is VERY color sensitive. I can''t imagine anyone seeing a H and saying "cool, it''s yellow". My GIA L isn''t even "yellow", it''s warmish under office lighting but not to the point where anyone would think it was supposed to be a light yellow stone

ok here is a good picture of it in good lighting haha i will get the measurements too in a minute.

My princess cut is a I and I see no yellow at alll.....

Was anyone wearing a yellow shirt? Yellow walls? That''s also a possibility.

Hi Macie

don''t freak out, Tac. A lot of people are color sensitive, especially when it comes to larger stones and especially! when they aren''t knowledgeable about diamonds.

When I first happened upon PS, I remarked about a friend getting engaged with a 2+ carat RB, I thought it was gorgeous and didn''t notice any color at all, but my other friend who was close to her told me right away that she thought it looked yellow. I thought my friend (the latter) was just being mean, but in reality I think she was more color sensitive than me.

I related that story here once when I was a newbie and kaleigh was so nice and quick to point out that warmth in larger stones is more apparent, but it isn''t a bad thing! I have learned so much here in the last (almost) 3 years, and from working in jewelry for a few months as well. My own diamond is a 1.5 J, SI1, and it may appear warm to people who are really color sensitive as well, sometimes it does to me.

Don''t feel bad about your gorgeous new stone, please. It''s an H for goodness'' sake, and huge, of course it is bound to not only be beautiful, but show a little warmth and that is a good thing in my book!

Even if the stone were graded badly by IGI and is actually say a J (worst case?), it is still absolutely not yellow.

Of course, the dirtier the stone, the less well-cut, the less bright the lighting environment, and the more yellow in the environment, the more your stone will show or give back a warmer yellowish tint. But your friend is definitely exaggerating when she calls it yellow.

I would definitely not worry about the remark. You do like the stone, and that is most important.

Live long,

Do you have photos??

Live long,
Bit ditto. Could there perhaps have been more of a tinge of green in the ' looks yellow' remark from your friend..? Could she be jealous and that was influencing her remark? Would you feel the same way about your diamond if she hadn't said what she did?

My guess is that b/c it is IGI, it may be a lower grade than "H", perhaps I,J or even K....I would send the stone to be-regraded or appraised by someone trusted (whom you did not buy the ring from)...also, larger diamonds I thought show more color, so that should be kept in mind.

For now, you could change the setting to look less "yellow" (if it is yellow)...but keep in mind your friend may be more color sensitive. I notice "yellow" in 3+ diamonds RB that are "I" or above....but would never mistake the diamond as a "yellow" diamond.

Was the stone dirty? That might have contributed to the yellow look also.

As long as you''re happy with it, I wouldn''t worry about what your friend sees.
