Hypo: would you rather have a luxury car or a luxury ring?

What luxury car can you get for 35k?

I'd take the ring. Cars depreciate the minute you drive them off the lot and will need to be traded in at some point. Even the nicest car will eventually show it's age. Plus, sometimes the 'luxury' brand cars are the least reliable and the most expensive to fix, and more reasonably priced cars aren't necessarily less comfortable or have less features than more expensive ones. In contrast, the ring will be with you forever.

The other thing to consider is that you have the budget for the ring now. You may find that once you're married there will always be more practical things that the money will feel more appropriate going to. Plus, it will be your money and not just his money at that point, so it won't feel so much like a gift as it will now. So get a practical, reliable car and some nice bling, and five years from now you'll trade the car in for a new car and *still* have nice bling. Win win.

yeah, luxury cars cost 60K+ in my experience.

I would select the most expensive ring option, IMHO most people replace cars as they age but other than here few people replace engagement rings, so buy the biggest and best diamond or gemstone you can, settle for a cheaper car knowing that one day you can always trade in and get a better car.

I'll take a nice diamond over a nice car any day of the week!..:appl:. That nice car will turn into a pile of rust within 10-12 yrs.

I don’t have a license to drive (yet). We have a family of 8, so a “luxury” vehicle is something in our very far away future...lol!
I’d prefer the $40,000 ring, and continue walking & taking public transportation. My DH can keep the Caravan & Construction Co. Truck...lol!! When they’re both rusting in a junk yard, somewhere, my beautiful sparkler will still look brand new, and outlive me!!! :lol-2:

New car and used diamond any day. Diamonds are reliable even if the previous owner neglected some scheduled maintenance!

Just live somewhere with good public transportation and put all your money towards the bling!

I'd take the happy medium between ring & car. I hate to be the voice of reason , but for me it works. I hate taking public transportation. So, I need a reliable yet not a Porsche Cayenne, but more like a Nissan Rogue. So, I choose a middle class car with a high middle class stone. :-) I see no issue with driving a Nissan Rogue (which I love) & wearing a 20-30K ring. The Rogue is stylish, loaded & luxury enough for me.:-)

Ok I'm the odd man out. My cars have always cost more than my ring of the moment. But I live out in horse country with rutted gravel roads and we get snow and rain. A good safe car is a must; it's kind of difficult to take a ring to work when it's below 0°, there's a foot of fresh powder on the roads and you need to be there at 7am.:o And a ring isn't much help taking a kid to a hockey tournament several hours away in the middle of winter. I blessed my Range Rover Sport on days like that. As for public transportation, I'd seriously go insane if I had to live in a city. I'm just not built for that.

In my youth, the car would have won as I raced autocross. Though, at the time, I raced restored Porsche 914s. I held on to that fast and fabulous car need until I recently bought a minivan to deal with kid and life. So, the ring would win hand's down. That said, my tricked out mini-van was $35k just a few years ago...

My husband has three Porsches and races a 914 in vintage car races! (This is why he is fine with my hobby.) And yes, my Toyota Venza was $35k a few years ago, too. So not a luxury car, but it meets all my needs and has excellent reliability and very low maintenance which is most important to me.

For all the reasons others stated above B all the way.

It is not that I do not like cars. I like nice cars for men. My father has driven luxury cars all my life. I would never spend that kind of money on cars though. I used to drive a preowned basic Mazda. I do now own a car right now. My boyfriend owns something practical and basic.

I do, however, own quite a bit of very nice bling and diamonds. I am crazy for, in love with diamonds but I guess that is why I am doing what I am doing right now. So I am an extreme case.

That said realistically speaking I think the poll would be a lot more interesting, taking into account customers´views too, if you raised that budget and asked property versus diamond. Many consumers choose between the two today when spending larger sums of money. They are much more similar with respect to holding value, also in that you can wear diamonds but also you can use and/or rent out a beautiful house or apartment. The question to me would sound much more interesting and realistic if you asked say would you choose a gorgeous beach house on the French Riviera (or whereever) or get a top FCD (or whatever diamond take your pick).

I think that question would make me think for a minute too. Much harder for diamonds to compete against vacations, creating a great memory, etc. and something that holds its value.

I would not ask this question though as a choice between a first home and diamond. A true luxure property versus diamond would make a good competition.

I pick a bIgger diamond and a $5k used car. Hubs would pick a classic American muscle car and a one pointer, but we didn't ask him

RING... without a doubt. :)

someone told me once, the value is in what you can sell it for, not what you can buy it for. i'd go for the best deal i could get on a pre-loved ring and a pre-loved car and try for the best of both worlds with a good chunk of the depreciation already taken out of the equation.

Ring, for all already mentioned reasons.

@bludiva makes a great point. Go with pre-loved for both and really maximize your budget!

I view a car as a need. I like one that is reliable and comfortable for me, as I drive with my left leg only (and hands). I don't give a Tinker's Cuss about an "Infotainment Center" as I PROUDLY do not own a stinking cell phone and never will. (Don't get me started.) I have more $ in watches than in the last 3 cars I have owned. Is it logical? No. Am I Mr. Spock?

I think high performance cars encourage people to drive irresponsibly at a risk to themselves and others. Traffic laws need to be more strictly enforced. I say so since I lost my leg whilst driving my motorcycle and I was hit by an inattentive driver.

Luxury doesn't always mean high performance though. I speak of the snoots in their miserable McLarens, Ferraris, etc. There is a local exotic car club where owners of those cars blast around on GTG's. A couple of years ago they were clocked going 110 on a BUSY local Interstate 5 miles from downtown. Fancy lawyers got most of them off.

Rant off.

My favorite rant subjects:
Flippers (solely motivated by greed)
Smell phones
Lawbreaking drivers

Good point! So many variables could make this more interesting!

The purchase I regret making the most is a brand new luxury car. It was PAINFUL paying for that! It felt so wasteful but it was what it was at the time.

Between a car and jewelry I will always take diamond (or top gemstones), for all reasons previously mentioned.
But if the choice is between a French chateau and jewelry....the house wins. Unless we’re cash poor and can’t afford the maintenance....then give me the diamonds

Yes great points. Here is my order. When spending money and of course the stage one is in in life is critical and will change the makeup of this list. But in general here is where my priorities were when I was young.

1. Education
2. Home
3. Luxury items
ER first of all the luxury items.

And within each category is a range of quality and expense and that is where our preferences play the role in our choosing what is most important to us re our spending dollars. Most bang for the buck if you will depending on your preferences. So while a car is necessary for many of us and might take priority over Jewelry you can opt for an inexpensive car and spend the extra saved money on your diamond.

Are those my only choices? Can I put the money in blue chip stocks?

It kind of depends, doesn't it? A lot of people live in places where a car is an expensive hobby, and a lot of people live in places where a car is a necessity. I'd lean towards the car though, because if I had a ring that nice I'd worry about it getting stolen.

Christine your car can get stolen too and BTW a great insurance policy would be a must for both.

I also look at PPW. Price per wear. I enjoy and wear a ring a whole lot more hours than the time spent in my car. And as long as the car gets me from point A to point B it has served it’s most important purpose. The Diamond brings me endless beauty and enjoyment. (YMMV).

However I wouldn’t mind one of these babies if I had more disposable income.
