Say you were about to be engaged...and your man offers you this choice:

(A): $5000 engagement ring + $35,000 luxury car

or

(B): $25,000 engagement ring + $15,000 car

Which would you pick? Assume you don't currently own a car and need one and that you don't already own any pricey jewelry?

Um, I dont consider $35k a luxury car. That wouldnt even buy my Toyota Highlander which happens to be a nice car but by no means
luxury.

Edit...I guess my choice would have to be A because you can only get a used car for $15k and not
really sure how great the specs are going to be (low mileage, seats 4 comfortably...etc).

I'm seconding tyty, lol. I think luxury cars are upwards of $50K but I could be wrong.

LLJ and I had this conversation once and neither of us value luxury/sports cars. We agreed having a comfortable reliable car that wasn't going to break down at any moment was just perfect. But we both value some nice bling though :lol-2:. It's about what you value, so I guess I'd be in the second category!

I’d have the $25k ring and the $15k car - as long as it was a decent car, I’m not super fussed on the specs. Tho I do like me some of the recent Mercedes A classes. I’d still prefer the ring I think

No question I'd go for the more valuable ring. A car loses value immediately and has a finite life. A diamond lasts forever. So I'd spend as much as I could for the biggest best diamond I could afford.

The car will show wear and tear, and need replacing at some point.

The diamond is more 'durable' and will outlive me. =)2

The 'practical' choice, therefore, is a gorgeous diamond in a simple setting, and a nice, reliable, second-hand car.

Ok. Let me give you my serious answer. Of course, I pick B, but not because I prefer diamonds over cars and I am female.

I am a financially disciplined person, and hence my thinking - A car depreciates by a lot right after you drive it away from the dealer parking lot, and it depreciates every year, whether or not you drive it. In addition, it is a money sinker, and requires yearly insurance and regular maintenance. After a limited number of years, the car is gone. On the other hand, a diamond will last forever, literally speaking.
To me, a car is just a means to get me from point A to point B, and it is purely a NEED, rather than WANT. Therefore, I need only a basic car. At this point in life, all I need is the most basic Lexus model. Nothing fancy. (Yes, I know, $20K would not do it.)

Well, so far at least one person took the pricier car! :twirl:

I think that's because of the dollar value in your question.
The kind of car one can purchase for $15,000 or $35,000 varies upon geographical area.
With internet vendors, diamond prices don't get impacted that way.

Good point. Maybe I should have changed the hypo to list a Toyota Corolla or a BMW instead.

I had to laugh at the bolded part. So a Corolla or Civic is out of the question. :lol-2:
Just joking.

3 words for you. Certified Pre-Owned. Or is that 2 words?:geek:

Uhhhhhh yea B all the way for me lol who cares about my car when I could I could stare at a larger, gorgeous sparkler all day long?!?!? I'll take a nice used car any day to add to my bling budget!

I do have the cheapest car Honda makes and an expensive diamond but in a cheap ring.

The ring! I drive a 2000 mountaineer.

Don’t laugh. Yes, Corolla or Civic or any preowned luxury car is out of question for me at this stage in life. I do not have any young children to support, or loans to repay. My days are spent on how to enjoy life.
Can’t take money with me after I die. Why short change myself?

A few years ago my husband gave me a Porsche 911 as a complete surprise. I have driven it only a few times. Last year when I decided I wanted to upgrade my ering, I gave him the car. I gave it to him again when I upgraded a second time a few months ago, lol!!! Definitely the ring for me!!!

(GIA/AGS) Certified Pre-loved? :appl:

Win win for both if you can find exactly what you want. Remember a deal's only a deal if you are getting exactly what you want!

As a buyer one must always do one's due diligence. And you might be able to find a sweet deal on one of the preloved sites so definitely check them out on a regular basis if you are in the market.

But I say spend the money on your dream diamond and just find a reliable car to get you from point A to point B. If you can only get one dream right now I choose the ring. For all the reasons everyone shared here. Since you were asking that is. Ultimately it is your decision and only you know what would make you happiest. Good luck and please come back and share pics. Of both purchases.:appl:

I agree! :appl:

I'm also at a stage of life at which I'm not interested in cutting corners on some things.

I’d take $40,000 in a ring and catch the bus.
And the $5,000 a year I wasn’t spending on insurance, rego, servicing and petrol I’d be adding more jewellery to my collection.
To me cars are just a money pit, in 10 years time your $35,000 car will be worth a paltry $10,000 or so, whereas your ring, if bought carefully, will always be worth much closer to the initial outlay.
But that’s me.
I know people who’d spend $200 on a ring and $39,800 on the car!

And I’ll add, when I was still a girlfriend of my now husband, he was looking at buying an Audi TT sports car.
Needless to say, after some discussion I got a lovely ring and he kept driving his old Mazda.
And 20 years later I still have that ring and have spent every day looking at it and loving it.
That Audi TT car is probably rusting away in a some car wreckers yard!
