Hugh Heffner died

I always marveled at how he aged but his girlfriends all stayed the same age...

I'm sorry that he died, but I disapprove thoroughly of his business; I thought the whole thing was utterly disgusting. Not only did PlayBoy Enterprises do more to objectify women than any other Western company I can think of, it also glamorized a seedy lifestyle and made rabid bed-hopping seem cool. Yeuchh. The PlayBoy Mansion, mentioned with glee in so many films and songs, and men all dying to be Hugh? All I can think about is the germs crawling from one set of nether regions to the next in that house.

He sold the "dream" of an empty lifestyle where women where just sexual statues not real people, and where their looks were everything, where there is no commitment or true love. As a real romantic, I can think of nothing more depressing than the PlayBoy lifestyle, and I, for one, think the world would have been better off if Hugh Heffner had been a hairdresser or a postal worker. I'm sorry he ever started his despicable business, and I'm sorry that we even live in a world where it's legal to portray one half of the human - I repeat HUMAN - race that way. Sorry, but as a woman, that's the way I feel. I find zilch to admire in a man like Heffner.

Didja hear the one about the version of Playboy magazine for married men?

Same centerfold every month.

:lol-2:

Sent this to DH ( my first answer to hubby when he forwarded me the link w/ the info were exactly yours as well, @kenny : total scumbag, couldn't care less...)

@Jambalaya well said, exactly my thoughts

adios!

I'm not sad to hear this news. This man managed to convince young and beautiful women to sleep with his decrepit self (there is not enough money in this world :knockout:). He created a world where women had no value beyond their looks and what they could provide in the bedroom...and he made that look like the dream. :eek-2:

Serious question though...at his age, could he even get it up anymore.

Viagra apparently works even when one's blood had turned to sludge. Learned this from my 97 yr old friend (who has since died). Her lover was 100. He just turned 102, gets around with a walker, and is apparently a very popular guy among the single ladies at the old folks' home.

:sick: I just can't get the image of all that wrinkly flesh out of my mind!

You know when you ask a question but later realize you didn't really want the answer? This is one of those moments.:lol:

:eek2:

Even more gross than the enterprise were the people who made a reality show depicting it. They were glorifying, or at least normalizing the notion of young women being official concubines. That show, the Kardashians, and our deliberate destruction of the planet have turned me into a scientist who is strongly opposed to any type of space exploration. We don't deserve a chance to wreak havoc elsewhere.

I am sorry he died, but I do not care for what he did. I am so glad to see I am not alone! I was seeing women claim he had been a big influence helping make women strong and not just objects. How!?? I think he seriously hurt women and we will never fully recover from his influence.

I disagree with most posts here. His 'industry' is not to my taste, but unless he illegally coerced women into posing nude, I don't think there is anything wrong with what he did. Pin ups were popular long before he started. I don't think sex work (of any kind) should be shamed if its willingly entered. Women owning their own bodies AND making money for it? Heck, stifling that sounds more patriarchal than the posing (or people who enjoyed it).

That said, I have NO idea how he made it to 91!

Kinda reminds me of what I heard John Lennon say when asked about The Beatles 'causing' all that stuff in the 60s.
Lennon responded with something like, "The Beatles were not responsible for it.
It was just happening concurrent with The Beatles."

Completely agree. But sex is so mired in religious stuff that people have this idea that the biological function is only acceptable within the confines society says is ok. Hefner capitalized on the titillation caused by something being forbidden and socially unacceptable therefore people WANTED it. Take away all the forbidden fruit crap and you don't have nearly the amount of issues like human trafficking, etc. we have today. This culture is so full of backwards logic it's laughable.

Seriously I was only half joking when I said I wonder if Viagra sales will go down now....

I'm curious to see how quickly Hefner and Playboy bunny costumes sell out. How many college kids will be setting aside the costumes they've certainly already purchased for those? :lol-2:

Well anyone with a silk or polyester bathrobe and slippers has a Hef costume.

Comfy! Though perhaps not appropriate for walking my tykes around the neighborhood on Halloween

I've read other comments that say the women were not coerced, entered into it willingly, etc. Yes, but he chose vulnerable women, women who put up with a 9pm curfew, perfunctory quick sex with no kissing, a ban on working, and a ban from having friends to the mansion. Previous women who lived at the mansion have blown the whistle, one of whom admitted to ending up with severe depression after her time there. She was a struggling waitress who has just lost her apartment lease when Hefner got his claws into her. And if you don't have a family who cares about you, and you're really young...well, what would you do? He did pay them but it was mainly in cosmetics procedures, clothes, and hairdos.

He was a predator.

I read one rule the 'bunnies' who rented a room in the earlier Chicago Playboy mansion had to agree to is no alcohol unless Hefner offered it to her.
