Can you pls share your thought on choosing between Jann Paul HPHT vs CVD? The price difference is huge (45%) and I am going for 4ct so it is very substantial. I would choose HPHT with any other LGD but with JP, I wonder if their quality control can actually help to minimize the grains and worth the savings.
Btw, they already have the HPHT rough so it will take 4 months to cut/grading vs CVD will grow and take 6 months. This is not a deal breaker but an add on bonus if go with HPHT.
I need to make a decision in a day or 2. TIA.

Ask them to provide the links to GCAL grading reports for a variety of their CVD diamonds so that we can check the crystal quality. JP is very meticulous, so I doubt there's anything to be concerned about, but it's best to see with your own eyes first for peace of mind.

How’s the return/exchange policy? I cannot tell the difference between well grown/cut CVD/HPHT with my naked eye so I would opt for the cheaper option.

Since it is large carat and they cut from rough, it is considered custom cut and no return/exchange. I have asked for sample certs. While LGD price is dropped everywhere else, the price has gone up quite a bit due to demand at JP :(

If it’s an emerald cut, I’d prefer HPHT. But since JP vets their growers, I’d trust their CVD. Also, since their cuts are super ideal and light return will be maximized, I’d feel ok with CVD.

Makes sense that they can keep their prices high. It’s the top tier of lab, and it’s a small operation with consistent development.

You must post photos when you finally get your ring! I have a JP band with melee.

So I'm not an expert the way other PSers are here. But I can't see any appreciable difference between the two. Definitely if you hadn't said which was which, I wouldn't have been able to choose. Since the CVD was known, I scrutinized it and maaaaaaaaaybe saw something, but nothing I would hang my hat on.

I know you have to make a decision soon.

@Karl_K, do you see any appreciable difference in the material of the two.

The cuts are so spectacular that I wouldn't necessarily opt for HPHT. But in this case, the time aspect favors the HPHT while the money aspect favors the CVD. I don't think there's anything here that would objectively sway you one way other the other.

Good luck! And do post photos! You can ask for a free video, but that will add even more time to your order. JP is so great - I have a video of the creation of my band, and it's so meaningful to me.

At one time they were a octavia reseller so I have a conflict.

Good material is good material no matter how its made is my stand.
Since the stone dont exists talk to them about their standards for both then take that info and decide.

Thank you. I asked but it is not clear what their standard really is. All they said is that they grow it slow as much as possible to minimize grains and if there are, they are not visible to naked eyes. I am leaning to cheaper option because I know I would not be able to recoup $ whether it is HPHT or not, so the least $ to put in the better.
@0515vision since you had your ring made, would you recommend to have them made the entire ring or just purchase the stone and have DK does it? It will save 6% duty fee.

Do they sell loose stones? I thought they didn’t. I love my ring, but DK is well-loved here. I don’t think you will go wrong either way.

Getting CVD and having DK set the ring sounds like a great plan. Excited for you!

Thanks @0515vision. I asked and they said I can it loose. The price has gone up like 25% in the last 2 months. I am torn whether to wait it out or just do it. But what you said sound like a plan I would choose if I decide to go ahead.

@DejaWiz for education purpose, can you pls point out the things you see in 0020 that are not in 0019? A picture would be greatly appreciated.
And this is a personal question, assuming the fund is no issue, in your view, would the HPHT material worth the 45% pricing difference?
As everyone, I would like to get the best $ can buy and since it is a big purchase, I don’t want to regret down the road.
Thanks.

Manually move the videos with mouse/finger until the facets flare up and you can easily see the CVD graining that isn't present with the HPHT option.
Here are screenshots of the CVD graining circled:

Keep in mind that these are highly magnified images/videos and that level of graining is unlikely to be visible to the naked eye.

True - but will there be a risk of light scattering as with any other graining in any diamond, natural or synthetic?
Not guaranteed either way until it's assessed in numerous lighting conditions.
I would trust JP to deliver amongst the highest QA on the planet, but my brain would need "mind clean", personally...in this situation, it'll come at a hefty price increase. :(

45% sounds like a lot, but it’s relative of course. What is the price difference in cold hard cash? Also, is this going to be a keystone or sentimental piece or not? Are you planning to invest $$ in the setting or not?

On some level this type of consideration feels akin to discussions of clarity with natural diamonds. If you can’t see it (and I highly doubt it’s visible at that level especially in normal viewing when diamonds are often dirty — or maybe that’s just me lol) then it becomes a mind clean issue. And that’s totally individual!

With JP at 4 ct I would expect the difference to be 5k+, which is more than enough to cover most settings. That’s definitely something to keep in mind too.

Thanks all for your inputs. I could not get pass the 45% price difference so I put down deposit for a CVD. The SA said he will take time to choose the nice batch and I do have time.
No, it is not a sentimental piece. None of my jewelry is unless it was gifted but I do not buy/sell; hence, I would like to make sure I get something nice enough that I can pass it down and the receiver will be as excited and love it as I do.

Do you mind sharing the turn around time they quoted you? I'm looking for a round in the 3ct range but I don't know if I'm patient enough to wait... For example, I messaged them earlier this week and the haven't replied yet

Hi! Who is JP? Which jeweler? Thank you!

I am working with Gene. He said CVD will take 6-7 months to grow and cut/grade. The HPHT rough is available and will take 4 months to cut/grade so I guess that they have a long waiting list for cutting.
I messaged them via WhatsApp and got response quickly.

This week is Lunar New Year so they are all on vacation visiting family, likely. Happy New Year of the Blue Snake!! (I'm Korean-American, so I'm tapped into this holiday.)

@DejaWiz Sorry to comment with nothing helpful or related to this thread, but I have only commented on this thread and was met with a warm welcome! I don't know where else to ask but I have tried posting a thread or two and they haven't shown up, do they need approval? Do I need to fully complete my profile? Am I doing something wrong? Would love any insight!
