Just want to make sure this is a reasonable quote. She's been wonderful to work with thus far, so I'm hoping the answer is yes so we can get started.

I'm having something like this made:

Setting

The center stone is a 1.51 (spread of a 1.67) D EC, so the sidestones (which she'll chose) have to be colorless as well.
The ring will be made in platinum.
She wants 4k.
Sound reasonable, or too pricey?

Thanks so much!

Sounds decent....Try some other vendors...Anything custom like that will be 3 to 5k or up....PIC?

I dunno...4k sounds really pricey for a simple setting like that. I think some other vendors around here (WF, ERD) could do it for cheaper.

I'm having Maytal make me the same ring (with a few minor modifications) for my 1.51 ct EC! My quote wasn't too far off. I suspect the reason mine was a bit lower is that I chose G color sidestones to match my center and I asked for the ring to be a bit lighter in metal than the Tiffany's version which I find just a tad too bulky for my taste. You also mentioned that your center stone has the spread of a larger stone which might mean that your sidestones need to be just a little bit bigger. Then there's also the possibility that metal prices have gone up in the couple of months I received my quote.

Yes, it's true that you could get this ring for much cheaper, but there's no guarantee that it would be done as well. You pay more for a handmade ring than you do for one that is cast. I've learned the hard way that it's better to pay more upfront than always look down at my hand with regret. There's also the added benefit that Maytal used to work for Tiffany's, so perhaps she's even made this exact ring before. You might also check with Leon Mege if you're still shopping around. He quoted me $2,200 for the ring setting alone, but wasn't able to give an exact quote on the sidestones (only gave a range -- the high end was $4,200 and would likely be higher for you given that you want colorless sidestones).

Would you mind sharing the dimensions of your stone (just out of curiosity)?

ETA I agree that Maytal is wonderful to work with. That is one of the reasons I chose her over Leon.

Hi Digable,

I don''t have a whole lot of experience, but my sister just got a ring made by Leon Mege and I believe it was more reasonably priced. Her setting was quite simple - much like yours - and Leon also found the side stones for her.

Just saw your thread with your stone''s stats. Mine also has a l/w ratio of 1.5:1. Looks like you found a stone with a very nice spread. Congrats!

This is just mho, but that does sound quite expensive for a simple setting liike that, without any pave or anything.
You may not care, but I have a feeling leon mege would be cheaper. From what i''ve seen, he really does a fabbo job with those lil corners that rest at the bottom of your side stones - perfect!
Granted, I haven''t seen a ring like this made by Maytal, but maybe its a good idea to get a couple other quotes at this stage?

Of course, if you really love her and her work and don''t care about saving a lil, just go for it!

I had that setting quoted from both Leon and Whiteflash in April of this year with .30 baguettes. Neither one of them were less than $4K.

As I mentioned above, I received a quote from Leon for this ring 2 months ago. While he couldn't give me an exact quote for the sidestones without my center stone in his possession, his price looked like it would be about the same as Maytal's. Bottom line: go with whichever designer you like best.
