I posted not too long ago about a diamond I was considering, in the end, I chose not to. So, my FF tells me to find a center stone for about $8,000 and he''ll handle the rest. I am *most likely* going to be using Mark over at ERD since we''re both in NYC, however, he is on vacation until the 17th of July. I would like to have something in mind by the time he gets back since I am looking to purchase by mid to late August. I believe my FF is going to go with a Tiffany replica knife edge solitaire setting or something similar to WF''s Legato with micro pave. I saw a stone that I absolutely loved about a month ago (it''s gone now). It was an H SI2 positively eye-clean. Great numbers, faint fluor., it measured 7.17x7.23x4.34. The size on the stone was great (I am certainly not opposed to going larger!) The price was great too, but my FF wanted me to look at more (this was the first stone I went to see). I am looking for a stone that is ideal or just slightly outside of ideal. Anyhow, I guess I''m just wondering how all of you would spend his money? I need some ideas and right now I just have soooo many numbers floating around inside of my head I think I have managed to confuse myself!!

Honestly? If you''re going with Mark he has really great customer service and skills at finding great stones. When he gets back just discuss your ideas with him and within a few days he will pull some great options for you. And you don''t have to stress over it!

Yes, if you are going with Mark, you need to wait and see what he can access at that time. H and SI1 are a pretty safe range.

From everything I''ve read about him, I figured as much. I guess I''m just a bit anxious. Also, I''m having a difficult time deciding on what color range to stick with, right now I''m considering everything from F to J and I started out looking at D''s. I''m even second guessing my choice of sticking with rounds. I''ve seen some beautiful ovals and emeralds. I suppose I''m just a bit all over the place right now!!

Then if you haven''t already, I would suggest going to all the jewelers in your area, and just look at everything! It will help, while waiting for Mark to get back, and maybe by then you''ll know what you want.

Thanks for the suggestion, Ellen. Perhaps I''ll spend the next couple of days off perusing through the selection at the (ugh!) mall stores! That should at least give me an idea of what looks best on my hands or enable me to cross a few off my list!!

Hi,

Sounds like you have too many options! I would LOVE to have $8K as my disposal to pick out a diamond

! lol For you, just focus on learning about well-cut stones in the shapes you''re interested in. I think for color, you need to look at stones in person and decide which appeals to you most - colorless or warmer toned and then take that from there. You may have to sacrifice on either size or color to find the exact stone you like, but for now, decide on shape and learn the basics.

Emerald cut stones are an entirely different species from rounds, so really, COMPARE those cuts in person and a few regular old B&Ms and see what looks best to you. Emeralds are so much more sublime than rounds, but rounds are so much more brilliant and alive!

Personally, with that budget, I would probably get an E-G color, VS2/SI1 well-cut round in around a carat. I''m just not into bigger stones. If I was into bigger, I''d look around the H-I color range and an SI1.

That is a good idea to help decide on shape. Just don''t pay attention to color because you can''t tell in jewelry store lighting and the mall stores may not have accurate certs on their stones anyway. G-H color is a good range if you want a whiter stone without the price jump for colorless. I''d only go to I-J if size is the most important factor for you.

I just did a search by price and noticed that Wink has a 1.32 H SI2 at around $7800. I only looked under H SI2 by price.

Yeah, I agree about the color being hard to detect in jeweler store lighting. Maybe try and find a few strip-mall jewelers (lol!) because most have windows that you can walk over next to and that way you can get a better idea of how color looks when not subjected to the store lighting.

My boyfriend was supposed to call Mark today. The 17th!!!! YIKES!! He deserves it, because he works very very very hard, but I'm sad for myself!

Think it's possible for him to find and set a cushion...and then send it to me in a matter of two weeks?

Sorry for the threadjack...lol...
