Hello Pricescope,

I am considering purchasing this diamond:

http://i.ebayimg.com/t/0-91ct-AGS-J-VS1-Custom-hand-fabricated-diamond-engagement-ring-/00/s/MTQ4MlgxNTAz/$(KGrHqZHJFEE-ko8eGBiBPzWImsWkg~~60_12.JPG

The AGS stats are: http://agslab.com/reportTypes/dqd.php?StoneID=0004958501&Weight=.906&D=1

The diamond is preowned and the price offered to me is 2900.

I think this is a great buy, but due to my inexperience I have no idea how the fluorescence will affect the look of the diamond.

Pricescope, would you please share your experience with me?

I love fluo! It looks so amazing! It will make a J appear whiter in certain conditions :naughty: but since that is an AGS 0 anyway, you won't really have to worry too much about it appearing tinted. It'll be too bright and sparkly! Just make sure you have long enough return policy to bring it to an appraiser to make sure the fluo isn't one of those that make the diamond look milky or hazy.

Are you going to keep it in that setting? It's so pretty!

I think I might recognize that pretty stone :rodent:

A J color diamond by AGS will face up very white, most likely you will have to compare it side by side with a diamond of H or better color to notice its slight warmth. In a bezel setting you can't see the tint at all. The fluoro will likely make a slight difference, making the stone look whiter is *some* situations, and the stone woll glow bright white/blue in black lights (like at a club). There is a very very small chance the fluoro will affect the appearance of the diamond. It is very unlikely, but make sure you have the stone evaluated by an independent appraiser, and take it into many different lighting environments yourself to make sure it looks nice and bright and sparkly. But really, negative effects of fluor are rare rare rare, despite the hype you can read. Most likely it makes no noticable difference.

Only buy using PayPal on ebay and pay with credit card, and make sure there is a good return period. Communicate through ebay messaging for everything.

You don't see fluorescence normally unless you have a UV light. You may see the slightest blue-violet tint in bright sunlight, but not enough to be noticed by others.

Dreamer_D you were right all along!

Any recommendations on who to go for for an appraisal? would bringing it to a local jeweler work?

ALso, I think I'll just keep it in the setting.

thanks everyone!

haha... well, don't say that until you see it ;)) In this case because it is a diamond with a lab report then all you need to do is take it to a local person who can answer some basic questions:

1. Is the diamond in the ring the one described in the lab report?

2. Is there any damage to the diamond?

3. Does the very strong blue fluroescence cause a milky appearance in bright sunlight?

4. What metal is the mount made from.

Now, the first two can be assessed by any jeweler really, and a little looking around online should help you find someone local to you -- ideally someone who does not sell jewelery or diamonds themselves. The third one is such a small possibility that honestly, you can assess it yourself! Take the stone outside in very bright sunlight. If the SBF is bad the stone will turn milky and opaque! If its not an issue you wil notice the stone goes dark-brownish and shows flashes of bright fire. If you are concerned about 3 then you can ask your appraiser about it, or you can send the ring to someone with a good reputation on PS. But I think a local person is adequate.

There is a very small possibility the stone is damaged under the bezel. You will want your appraiser to try and see if this is the case using their scope. They can't see under the bezel but they can see into the stone and might see some evidence of damage if there is anything major.

Finally, when you have the diamond assessed do NOT tell your appraiser that the stone was bought on ebay. Especially if they are someone who sells jewelery themselves. Also be prepared for the possibility your appraiser will be poorly informed about fluor and will try to tell you the stone is crap because of it. This might be the case especially if they themselves sell jewelery. It is annoying, I find, dealing with appraisers who are not very good. You have to sometimes know more than they do :nono: At least in my experience. If you don't have anyone indepdent local to you, then it may be worth just having it sent to you, looking at it and deciding if *you* like it, and then sending it off to Dave Atlas for an appraisal, or to anothe trusted PS appraiser who at least won't try and convince you your stone sucks so you will buy from them instead.

And good job on the price negotiation, that is a great price and especially so if you like the setting. Even if you scrap it and get melt value for it, you will only have paid about $2600 for that diamond, which is a very good deal indeed! I like the setting though, it is really cool. But let your GF decide.

Is it just me or does the edge of the diamond on the inside of the bezel seem rough and scratched up?

Or am I just completely noob, and that's just how all diamonds look in bezel settings.
