How to smudge a face in a pic for posting?

Can someone tell me how do I smudge a face in a pic for posting here? I know one could use a programme for it but I do not know which one? Anyone knows??

ETA: I am a computer dude!!

It is not 100% safe.

I read somewhere that the police recently caught a criminal who posted pics of himself committing the crime online after electronically altering his face.
A computer expert was able to recognize the computer code and undo it.

The guy was arrested and the pic was used as evidence against him.

If you want to be 100% safe, print out the pic, cut out the face with a razor blade then take a pic of that pic.
 
I only post from paint, no photoshop experience, and I only know how to use the cut function in paint...lol. are you wanting more advance stuff than photoshop?

OMG, its really scary what a techie can do in internet!! Thanks for the heads up, kenny.

What about scanning a photograph with a piece of paper paste over the face? Could a comp expert be able to redo it to its original face? (I would really hate to cut the face out of a beautiful photograph)

No, not photoshop, just want to cut out the face electronically or smudge the face so that no one can recognize it.

However, as kenny said above if a comp expert can redo it, then I am not so adventurous to try it!

I used a "cutout" box on paint to digitally cut it out (no pasting of another square), not on a actual photo, If you scan your picture in, (do you have a PC?) you should have a paint application in your accessories folder. I''ll post an attachment
 
paint program on PC
click on that box as shown, drag over where you want to cut while holding your left mouse button then unhold, then right click and "cut" then resave your picture with the new cut out faces.

I am only reporting on the news story I read.

I do know that with computers when you delete something it usually does not actually vanish.
It stays on the hard drive but the instructions to find it in the normal way just don't work anymore.

Police investigations are always confiscating hard drives of computers.
Frequently what we think we delete is still there and available to a computer expert who knows how to get at it.
I think you have to actually reformat a hard drive to truly delete stuff - this actually writes over everything that was there.
After reformatting, does any slight magnetic residue remain for the most sensitive equipment to detect?
Ask the CIA; I'll bet they've tried.

I would think that putting a VERY thick piece of paper over the person's face on the scanner bed, then scanning it to make a new file would seem pretty safe.
But I wouldn't put money on it.

oh, I thought you mean that someone out on the net, can take my picture from here and "repaste" so to speak... whew! but I do know what you mean though about the hard drive having those files even when deleted, our IT person has a software that you can pop in to purge all the "deleted" files even if you think you have permanently deleted it.

I cut out the face and choose "save as" and save it with a different name. That way I still have the original photo, and I can delete the chopped one after I've uploaded.
Unless you have saved the little face that you've cut out, I don't think you can repast it after you've closed paint.
 
Sorry megeve, I have no idea.
Like I said I'm not a computer programmer.

I'd play it safe and assume that anything done to a file on a computer can be undone by a programmer.
I hope I'm wrong but I'd rather err on the side of caution if it is something that you want to keep private.

however, I have "saved" and not "save as" before which luckily it was on pictures that I uploaded, so it didn''t completely disappear.

Kenny, I think I remember the case you are referring to. In this instance the face in the photo was "swirled" with software to make it unrecognizable. However, it was possible to restore the image by moving the individual pixels back to thier original positions.

The same cannot be done for a face that has been "cut out" of a photo because the original pixels have been replaced with
a solid color. Choro72 and D&T are correct, if one posts a photo edited this way then it cannot be restored.

He found out that someone who knew more about computers than he did could reverse it.

I suggest that unless you are a computer programmer don't make assumptions about what is or is not reversible.

This is my opinion.
I'm not an expert.
I may be wrong.
I am a careful person, frequently overly-careful.

If you want to take the risk that some other process cannot be reversed, or feel there is no risk then so be it.

unfortunately paint is very limited on its creativity. Hopefully others will chime in with other software though.

I think OP was wanting to cloak the identity of friends, family or herself, not hide from the FBI and enter the witness protection program.

Any photo editing program should suffice for your purposes (all bets are off if you''re actually a criminal wanted by the government)

Oohhh, thats too sophisticated for me! That being said, I have seen in PS some kind of a transparent mask over the face. How is that done? Can it also be done with paint program?

you can use the "star" cut out function and it just takes dotted lines across the face, you you can use the spray can and pick a color on the bottom left and spray over the face.
