I find the diamond industry very fasinating. I am studying the GIA graduate diamond diploma. Will it help if I want to get into this industry? Can anyone give me some suggestion on how I can get into this field? My drawback is I am not really a sales person, I am a horrible on as the matter of fact

, so applying a sales position is not an option for me. Thanks!!!!

GIA credentials are helpful in a variety of careers in this industry but the first thing is to get some experience and the vast majority of people, at least in the US, start on the sales floor of a retail jeweler. Other avenues include starting in the back office with things like accounting or advertising or starting with a manufacturer or importer and working on a variety of tasks ranging from cleaning to pickup and delivery. It’s different for every company and there's lots of choices. Here’s the rule:

Find a job. Find a better job. Find a career.

Sometimes this path will take you through several companies and sometimes it will be climbing the ladder at one but the effect is the same. GIA credentials help move along this path a little faster, especially on the last step but it’s not really the answer to the first.

There are many jobs within the diamond industry which do not involve direct sales, e.g. diamond graders for cutting houses; in-house Gemologists for retail jewelry stores; jewelry designers (especially those trained in Computer Aided Design as this is the direction the industry is currently headed).

It is all about who you know in this field.
The best advise I can give you is network network network.
The more people you know the better.
