How to find well-cut diamond for earrings

Hi all,

My next project is getting diamond stud earrings, but unfortunately I have to shop at one of non-reputable stores because I have their gift certificate. However, I know they carry some good stones, but most of diamond earrings they sell don’t come with any certificates. I hear the cut is more important than clarity or color for earrings, but how I would know the stone is well cut?

Do most jewelers let us to see the cut by using their equipment?
Has anyone brought Ideal-Scope to a jeweler store? I am not brave enough to pull my own tools out from my purse at a jewelry store.

Has anyone done it?

yes buy an ideal scope/aset scope and bring it with you. Also a loupe. Once you get over your fear, you''ll have fun choosing the pick of the litter. It''s your money, you''re entitled to examine the diamonds.

A guy here just took an idealscope to Tiffany, so if he can do that, I''d say the rest of us should have no fear!

The best way to make retailers accept the reality of cut grading, is to bering your IS into the store and use it. They should not be offended if you really intend to become a customer. You don''t have to just take their word for it, that the diamonds are superior in cut, when you have tools to assist you. Be brave!

I agree with oldminer. The IS is very useful and can really help you out!! Bring a loupe too to look at inclusions. Don''t be afraid to use them!!! You are spending considerable money at the store and should get good quality.

I was just so afraid of making sales people offended if I pull out a loupe or Ideal Scope to see their diamond. I noticed that sometimes I get a cold shoulder if I ask many questions such as H&A, and they don’t seem to want a business from me any more.

But, you are right. It’s my money and I have a right to inspect whatever I am buying.
If someone can pull out his Ideal Scope at Tiffany, we can use it anywhere else, right?
Just in case, I will bring my husband with me besides the gift certificate, so maybe they may see some extra $$$ in his face

and maybe it will help.

I would just ask politely and use nice language when you bring out the IS. You could say something like, "I have this tool that looks at light return called an ideal scope, would you mind if I used it on your diamonds? Cut is really important to me." If they say yes, then go for it! If not...you really don''t want to spend money there.

Thank you so much for your very important advice! I will be very careful and make sure I will be using right words in polite manner when I ask their permission for the use of my tools on their diamonds. Since I am not a native English speaker, the example wording you gave me was a quite help! I think I should just memorize it
