How to find a reputable appraiser?

Hi all, I was wondering how to find a reputable appraiser in my area? I have looked online and in the phone book and haven''t found anything and even if I did I would be scared to use them without knowing them. What do I look for? Who do I trust? I don''t want to send it somewhere. Any help will be greatly appreciated. BTW, I live in central California if anyone knows an appraiser in the area.

Sheree, there's quite a few California appraisers listed on Pricescope's list of appraisers at the top of the screen above.

You might try calling 3 or 4 local jewelers as well, asking who they consider a top-drawer independent or objective appraiser in their area. If you start hearing the same name over and over again, that's probably the one.

We're prohibited from recommending specific appraisers on the forum, however as Richard has mentioned the list of appraisers available via the link at the top of the pages here on PS contain appraisers which have a reputations for being consistent and impartial. If you're not able to find one in your specific area, you might consider having the stone sent to some of the more prominent ones who frequent the forums here on PS.
