how to decide on a 5 stone when you can't try them on!

Having decided on a 5 stone ring as opposed to a pear diamond (although stunning, I am a bit clumsy and as it is to be a RHR, might not be the bets option), I am now looking (and drooling) over all the 5 stone ring threads on here :)

My problem is that I have no-where local to me to try on some rings to get a feel for size of diamond, and whether to go for a graduated or all the same size. I live on a small island and do not get to travel off it that often. There are some jewelers here, but none stock a great/varied selection, and they really don't seem to give much information about the diamonds.

I think that next time we take a trip away, i will have to visit some shops and try on some rings just to get a feel. This is a long term project at the moment - but i want to get started right away! No patience :)

I may have to try cutting out some paper templates.

I didn't try any on myself either. I wanted a graduated one, and no one around here would sell any.

Well first, what size is your finger?

A good visual to consider is that a one carat round diamond is going to be roughly the same diameter as a typical pencil eraser. Personally, I think the graduated diamond layout in a five stone is very attractive. A one-carat center flanked by two half-carats and two thirds would be something to sing about, in my humble opinion.

thanks for the replies

my ring size is 4.75

Niel - your 5 stone is gorgeous, and definitely an inspiration for me.

My engagement ring is a three stone (total carat weight 0.64ct, G, Vs2 - not certified diamonds, this was an estimate by local jeweler) and a very dainty 1.9mm 3/4 eternity diamond band. i am concerned that a graduated one may look to similar to my three stone, but i do love the look of them.

my hubby does not want me to ever upgrade or in any way change my engagement ring which i totally agree with as it holds a lot of sentimental value. but being a bit older now and knowing a bit more about diamonds (thanks to PS), i would love to have a RHR with some bling.

thanks again

I always thought a pencil eraser was 7mm  shows what I know

Also, that sounds pretty to have such a large graduation, but a small graduation will fill your finger up your finger for cheaper

My ring cost me well under 5k(more like 4k) and its ks..... 84,.32,. 15 (6mm/4.5mm/3mm). My finger is a 7.5 andthe spread is perfect. Just sits on my finger top end to end. So something really stunning can be accomplished for a good price. Plus, if you have smaller fingers, that's even better!

I know others on here are better at knowing what mm (end to end) you would want you 5 stones to measure based on your finger size.

thanks, that picture of the ring on the strawberries is amazing and kind of the look i would want to go for.

i think i would be looking at the same kind of size (no bigger than 5 x 0.3ct if all the same size), so like you showed, Niel, i can work out the total width of that and then use the dimensions of the other stones

I am going towards 0.55ct for middle, 0.3ct either side and 0.15ct or 0.2ct at the ends.

i am going away soon, so will have to try some one and decide.

That sounds really pretty! Just remember you have to go by mm not CTW when doing that math.

That strawberry one is actually on sale right now on loupetroop. but I suspect couldn't be sized down for you, plus, I think the size is too big for your enviously tiny hands. :Up_to_something:

Also I don't think it'll look too much like your ring. They will match but not look the same. Also, maybe doing it in a rose or yellow gold might make it look a little different. :))

And PS, thanks for the compliment about my ring! I love it. Sure its not the biggest but you can't beat the pure "wall of bling" you get with a 5 stone. Plus, you keep the stones smaller so you can go lower in color without it being to noticeable.

thanks for the tips, especially about diamond colour. and i really like the idea of the rose gold. going to have to go back through the threads now, as i am sure i sure a rose gold u-prong graduated ring somewhere! problem is i fall in love with all of them and there are so many beautiful rings!

just been on loupetroop and drooled over that ring! Like you say, not sure about the sizing though, but it sure is beautiful

I would find it hard to decide between a graduated 5 stone (I love the idea of a larger centre piece stone) and then equally balanced sizes across the top. Both are lovely and I also enjoy cruising thru the threads of 5 & 7 stone rings!!

I'm always drawn to a trellis and I love the BGD design on their site, plus the WF and the one Yssie had made.... You are fortunate to have such lovely tiny fingers - anything will look amazing!

When I was picking a band, I wanted side to side coverage so just advised the vendor what width we were covering in mm's, and built it that way. My IDJ 1/2 eternity and my DBL FLY were based on the top coverage I wanted, but I have 8 & 7 stones, respectively.

Good luck as you decide!

I also would like to add a five stone ring to my collection and spend time looking thru the threads. I would like to say that if it was going to be your main ring I would choose a graduated look like Niels. If it is a RHR I would choose a same stone size traditional five stone. I personally will get the same stone size ring. In that style .25ct or .30ct stones seem perfect.
