Hi Everyone

I am new here - I recently got engaged and my wonderful boyfriend got me a Tiffany engagement ring which I always dreamed and wished for...my question is how do I care for it without scratching it, I have a habit of rubbing it with whatever top i am wearing could this damage it/take the sparkle away etc?

any advice anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated

thank you so much

rox, i''m not sure you posted in the right section, but i just use a jar of jewelry cleaner and a small baby toothbrush once a week, i use a microfiber if i just want to get rid of some fingerprints during the week, i know other use ultrasonic cleaners but i haven''t purchased one yet

Diamonds are the same everywhere. Rubbing your diamond with your shirt will not scratch it. You can get it cleaned at any jewelry store, or you can practice some of the techniques mentioned here on the boards--using a baby toothbrush with a mild dish washing detergent and gently "brushing" it, making sure to get into the crevices. Another way is to buy yourself an ultrasonic cleaner, or a steam cleaner.

I have colored gemstones and use the toothbrush method. But I also clean them about every other day.

thanks for your help sorry if i posted in the wrong area - still trying to get used to this forum thank you x

Tiffany''s will clean a Tiffany ring for free. I live down the street from the store so I just take it in once a month or so.

Welcome! I clean my diamond every day in my ultrasonic, but the following will do:

Yellow gold and plaitnum - warm water, a drop of dishwashing detergent and a splash of ammonia, soak and brush with baby toothbrush

whitegold - warm water, dishwashing detergent, soak and brush with a toothbrush

Do not use ammonia on whitegold, it will eat away at the rhodium plating.

Good luck!

I always use a baby toothbrush with a little bit of washing up liquid, or when I''m near a Tiffany store, I get them to clean it.

Which is better...an ultrasonic cleaner or a jet steam type cleaner?

Since Tiffany only sells platinum engagement rings you don''t have to worry about most cleaning chemicals. As someone else mentioned, ammonia would eat away at the plating of white gold.

I clean my platinum and diamond ring every morning. I keep a container of jewelry cleaner (that comes with a little brush for removing debris) in my linen closet in the bathroom. When I roll out of bed and head into the bathroom for a shower I just remove my rings and plop them into the cleaner. Then, once I am done showering and putting on face lotion and whatnot I plug the drain, take them out of the cleaner, brush under the stone with the brush, and rinse. Then I just dry them off with a shower towel and put them back on.

Just remember that diamonds are one of the hardest substances on earth. It would take a lot ot scratch it. Platinum, however, is considerably softer. Most people I know who have a platinum ring get it polished once or twice a year to remove the patina (the dullish look that platinum gets after a while). Some people like the patina so they leave it.

You can also purchase cleaning cloths, (just an example, you might find them cheaper) if you don't want to always be using your shirt.

And congrats!!

Ditto, I like those cloths they really bring the diamond and setting up nicely.

Tiffany diamonds absolutely must be cleaned exclusively with these.
