How to choose/grade melee

Hi All,
Last time I posted I was getting marry, now I have a daughter....time flies. Anyway, I''d like to purchase some melee (0.2ct/ea) without cert for my daughter''s 1st b-day. I plan on buying a couple of them every year until she is 18 (or later). So she would have something nice when she get marry. How do I choose a high quality melee without cert or any measurements of the stone other than visual judgement or relying on the vendor''s suggestions.

Nice idea.

The only suggestion I can give is purchasing from a known reputable vendor....
There are quite a few options on PS...

Now, is it 0.02 carats you mean (that is considered melee''s-- 0.01 to 0.08 cts.)
Or is it 0.20 carats? (That is considered ''fifth''s-- 1/5th. of a carat...)

Small diamonds can be bought in general categories of color and clarity. You can buy D-F, or G/H colors and IF-VVS2 or VVS-VS, or VS1-VS2 combinations, all of which most folks would agree are either fine or very good quality ones. There will be price variation depending on your choices. Most good jewelers or Internet vendors can quote you a price.

MY only thought is that I''d want to buy them all at the same time so they''d be well-matched. Instead, you could save money in a savings or mutual fund account and give her a pair of nice diamond earrings or a pendant when she graduates from college or gets married.

Diamonseeker2006: Good idea for mutual fund investment. I just wished my mom had bought me diamonds since I was a baby.

Diagem: I meant 0.15ct to 0.2ct. I thought they are still melee for size under 0.23ct. What should we call this border line size? I was hoping after some years of collection, it would be enough for a nice little bracelet.

David: I didn''t see internet vendors offer melee at that size, they are listed for at least 0.23ct or bigger and usually with GIA cert. Would you have any suggestions?

Gary at www.diamondexpert.com can get h&a melee in .20 but dunno if he will sell them by the one and 2s anymore.
Wink Jones can also www.winkjones.com but again I dont know if he is still doing one or 2 at a time on them.
I bought my .15 from Wink.
Most wont want to mess with them because the amount of money made per stone is very low.
Gary would be the one most likely to mess with it.
