Frank, you little sweetheart, you are doing a fine job! You have come to the right place... we''ll help you through this and you''ll have a KILLER ring that your girlfriend will ADORE! I promise!

OK... more to think about. I know you said you want platinum... how about maybe re-thinking that to white gold? It''s SO much cheaper (plat is sky high right now). It''s just a thought. And money you save on the setting is money you can put towards -- you guessed it -- the DIAMOND!

And also, I am still saying that you should at least check out (ideal cut) I/J SI stones! Repeat after me, DO NOT BE AFRAID!

I know that those poor, sad specimens (of I/J, SI stones) in the mall are FEARFUL! But that is NOT what we are talking about here. Trust me on this! Promise me you will at least THINK about it!

not enough information to determine cut quality. the 58% table has me thinking no.

if you are really bothered by a lower color and clarity, then just stick with H SI1 but keep that cut top notch and get a smaller stone. to me that stone you posted would not be a contender if i was buying.

Mara,

What''s your suggestions ?

You once suggested this one
http://www.whiteflash.com/diamonds/diamond_Details.aspx?itemcode=AGS-6640203

But I am a little bit concered about the clarity SI2. I am not an expert, neither is my girl. So our bottom line is eye invisible.

Another question, is H color safe for me? you know, if I trade online, I couldn''t take a look before paying.

Are there any other good choices you can suggest for me?

Thanks,

Frank

Frank I don''t know what is ''safe'' for you, it''s such a personal thing for everyone on where their color or clarity comfort levels are.

Personally I have had a G and an H and now a J and I love all of them. The H was just as white as my G in my opinion, so I would say if you are considering a G then consider an H. But if you are worried about anything lower that''s fine.

SI1 or SI2 clarity can be great...and can be a great deal in terms of $$

But why don''t you call the vendor and ask them if that diamond is eye-clean? I don''t have the diamond so I couldn''t tell you but I am sure that with the diamond in-house they can tell you whatever you want ot know about it.

Looking online at numbers and pictures is great but at some point you have to take the next step and call in and see what vendors have in stock and what they think about the diamonds. Sometimes they can even recommend other stones you wouldn''t consider based on how they look in person.

Good luck!

With that diamond the major inclusions are right in the table area. If I were going for an si2, I''d prefer the bigger inclusions to be closer to the girdle, hopefully even where a prong could cover them. If you ask them about the diamond also ask if the crystals are dark.

H should be just fine. I personally feel that the color gradings are not a smooth gradation but have ''jumps''. In other words, H is close in color to G, but is not as close in color to I which is where it starts to get noticable without a comparison stone. IMO of course. Also IMO, the larger the diamond is, the more noticable the color.
Speaking of jumps, if your diamond choices are really hovering right around the .5 carat range, you might want to aim for just below it like .48 carats. Diamond prices jump at the .5 mark. Your eyes won''t be able to tell the difference, but your wallet sure will.

My personal preference is for a ring that is balanced between a beautiful diamond and a beautiful setting. She''s going to look at the ring many many times every day, and while the diamond may not always sparkle, the design will always be lovely. (It''s amazing how fast those things get dirty!)

What will end up being the most important thing to her is that you put a lot of time, effort, and thought into finding her a ring as special as she is.

Frank, I love the one from WF. I''d give them a call tomorrow and ask them if it''s eye clean. Looks to me as though it is, but they will give you their honest opinion. Good luck!!!

Re. Blue Nile... and the initial G/VS: there are no pictures, or stats about them. If you wanted to try out such a stone and judge cut quality on your own (IdealScope?) it may take a bit of trial and error - and calling in 1000 diamonds to look at doesn''t sound terribly appealing. However, a seller could do that for you: the thought of a non-H&A stone selected for brilliance is a pleasant one - for me at least.

My 2c

The half carat size is lucky - color shows more the larger the diamonds get, so you get away with more for this one than one could for a 2-3 carat diamond.

Thinking of I-VS, but the H-Si2 you found sounds just as nice. I doubt those inclusions will ever show in person. And if they do - you can always change the stone while there''s still time.

hi frank sorry i never responded to your pm, i''m a space cadet sometimes!!

i think that the .50 H SI2 sounds fabulous but that you should definitely talk with whiteflash about the eye-cleanliness of the stone, have you called them about that stone? they have the stone in-house so they could tell you what it looks like...definitely call them!!

i would also hands down buy from WF over BN personally...i don''t like how BN does not have the stones in-house and also does not have more information on their stuff...bah!
