How thin is too thin for the girdle?

Hello all-
I would''ve posted this earlier, but I stayed home from work, forgot to feed the dogs, never showered or ate because I was reading ''another interesting post''....if ya know what I mean
naughty.gif
...Anyway - I recently rec''d my stones (1 -.58 and 1-.59 RBC), and I have a question about the girdles

#1 stone: GIA: very thin to thin -------- Sarin: thin - medium
(Sarin #''s are 1.1% (0.9-1.3))

#2 stone: GIA: thin to medium ------------Sarin: thin - medium
(Sarin #''s 1.5 % (0.9 - 1.7))

Should I be concerned about the "very thin" rating of the girdle for setting purposes? Am I at risk for cracking the stone at some point?

Thanks
Icelovr

0.9% is fine, we don't like to see it below 0.7%

the second one that reads thin -med is better,As it states it on both the sarin and the G.I.A,
yes it is true that if you have a stone with a vthn-thin girdle you are more likley to chip it .than one's that have a little more"girdle"to it.

With both girdles starting at .9% you should be safe. AGS nomenclature states that if it goes below .51% you are then in the "danger zone" of being too thin.

Thanks everyone - I just wanted to be sure. Now I am.

Sarin (and AGS) measure the girdle as a straight %.
GIA look at the girdle, or measure it in mm, and call it thin / medium etc.

So what AGS would call thick on a 0.10ct, would be thin for GIA, and AGS would call a 10ct diamond thin, GIA might call it slightly thick or even thick.

That is interesting Gary. So which do you prefer? The description by GIA or AGS percentage based grading?

To me, it sounds like the GIA way is a more consistent measure, when considering "safety" of the stone.

Surely the susceptability of a girdle to chipping would relate to it's actual thickness, not it's relative thickness compared to the rest of the stone.

When considering the amount of "wasted weight" in the girdle, the AGS way seems to provide a more consistent measure.
