i''ve seen many leon rings on this forum that have VERY thin shanks (I think the thinnest at 1.5 with micropave). i want something 2mm or lower, but wanted to get opinions on the structural integrity of thin shanks. whiteflash told me 2.2mm was the lowest they would go, even with a plain solitaire.

i guess my question is: why does whiteflash set the limit at 2.2mm, whereas leon is willing to go much thinner? they are using the same materials to make the ring. is it a matter of technique, or is one just more cautious than the other?

I would talk to him about what he feels is safe. It maybe technique.

Most people don't were a Leon Mege ring as their everyday ring, especially the one's with pave. That could be a factor.

I spoke with Leon a few weeks ago and he said that 2mm is pretty much the thickest shank he does at the moment. I have only seen one Leon ring get truly mangled (I think it got caught in a slammed door, or something), but I haven't heard of any structural issues with his rings. Sometimes you can make up for a thin shank by adding a little to the height of the shank, so perhaps that's how he does it. I've noticed that a lot of the thin shanks he does are round on the interior, meaning not flat against the finger, so that gives a little more body to the shank and adds some additional support to the pave.

I know he will do a 1.8, bc we talked about it when we put mine together. Which will be two 1.8''s put together that go to a split shank. I do think I saw a 1.1mm on here not too long ago but it wasn''t a Leon.

my *guess* is it''s technique. whiteflash rings are cast, leon rings are handmade.

My Leon soliitaire is about 2mm and I just can''t imagine needing it any thinner. The shank is thick the other way which makes it very substantial.

When I was speaking with Maytal, I believe she had mentioned the handmade platinum rings (by someone skilled!) is much sturdier than cast platinum.

If purchasing from a particular vendor, I would stick with what they feel comfortable with. If I wanted something else, I would go to someone else who felt comfortable doing it.

I tried on a 1.7mm Simon G pave band... very delicate and pretty! I could have sworn I remember a 1.2mm somewhere.

When Maytal made my ring, she suggested making the shank 1.8mm. That made me nervous and so she ended up making it around 2.1-2.2mm. I think it is very delicate even at that width. I guess I can''t imagine how it would be if it was thinner than that.

thanks guys!! i will call leon to see what his thoughts are. i''m guessing he is very comfortable making the shanks thin since his thickest shank is just over 2mm. when i was trying on rings, my favorite look was actually the stone in the temporary stone holder, which was very delicate. i can''t wait!!

now i''m off to read threads about ring sizing...my finger looks different sizes throughout the day, so this will be tough...
