From the way you tell it, I don't see much likelihood the fall could have caused the damage. The likeliest cause would be that it somehow got damaged while you were wearing it.
There are many cases of a diamond/ring suffering an impact that the person wearing it didn't even notice at the time.
Our hands bang into things all the time.
The weight of a loose diamond, on its own, is just too insignificant to cause the stone to chip when it hits a counter.
But hey, all sorts of weird things happen......
