How perfect should a handmade ring be?

Ok, I received the 3 Ritani Endless Love rings (e-ring and 2 w-bands) from Pearlman's two weeks ago but have been way too busy with work and family visiting to thoroughly inspect the merchandise and take pics... By the way, as an aside, Julian and Jason have been a joy to work with and I am 100% sure they will work with me on this "issue" I have if I so choose... The thing is, I will be proposing in the next week and am waiting to ultimately get my now-GF's opinion on the matter (if she even notices) before making another move... But I did want to get everyone's expert advice on PS since I value it so...

I hope I attached correctly what I consider the most obvious pic that the e-ring is a little askew... In addition, it seems like 1 prong may be a bit larger as well... However, I totally realize that this photo was taken in super-macro mode and it not AS noticeable in real-life size...

Which brings me to my questions... Am I asking for too much perfection from a handmade ring?... If I do decide to send it back, could I possible be risking doing more harm than good to the setting/and or diamond?...

In other words, what would you do if you were me?...

This second pic almost makes me wonder if I am trying to manufacture imperfection in Ritani's work...

Last, but not least, just one of the best pictures I was able to capture of all 3 rings together...

one of the prongs has a bit less of a hook over the top of the stone otherwise I dont see anything.
I don t think its anything anyone would notice out in the world.

Strmrdr,

I am glad you chimed in first because, like many others, I consider you one of the gurus on here... Ok, you seem to think I am being crazy (which is the answer I think I want) about the prong, but what about the entire head being rotated a bit on its axis?... This may just be an impossible thing to get 100% right anyways...

Thanks...

It''s fairly noticeable (the prong) in the first picture to me. I might wait to see if it bothers your gf first though, but if it were me I would want it fixed. The ring is beautiful though!

hmmm i discounted the twist because it only looks twisted in the first pic so figured it was an optics/angle issue.
Does it look twisted in person?

Ditto. It''s noticeable to me in the last pic too.

Did you notice it before you saw it in the pics? I know these macro shots really emphasize everything.

I also noticed the prong right away. I think that would be easy enough to send back and get fixed, though. As for the twist, I feel like I can''t really judge it enough from the picture. Does it appear twisted in real life?

I noticed the prong right away, before reading your post, in the first picture. I really did not notice it as much in the other''s. I don''t think that it would be all that noticeable in real life, but if so then I would want it fixed. That being said, I would probably wait a bit so I could enjoy my ring first!

Thanks for all the replies so far and please keep the coming. I went ahead and sent Julian (my contact at Pearlman's) a link to this post so he can know what is going on in my head and with the rings as well.

As far as what I see "in person", I have to admit I noticed the head being tilted a bit (in addition to the basket possibly not being a perfect square, even more than I think the 1.015 ratio diamond isn't) as well as the what appeared to be the oversized prong. The thing is, I am A LOT pickier than my GF and have a bit of an eagle eye for symmetry which some might call a compulsion.

I will try to include a few more pics below to elicit more opinions.

By the way, I should give credit to my sister for taking these. :)

gosh, as much of a pain as it would be, I'd opt to send it back and have the prong fixed. I can't really tell if the stone tilted but if it's bothering you it's worth having it tweaked. IMO handmade will not be absolutely loupe/40x magnified picture perfect but it should be eye-clean perfect, meaning if you can see something with your naked eye that's off it should be fixed.

gorgeous rings though

Allen,
You are asking what would I do if I was you?

I can see that prong being bigger than the rest. Look at it from the profile, is it secured to the stone? If yes, this is what I would do.
I will fully discuss with the person doing the job if what bothers you can be fixed without the expense of ruining something else. If you are not comfortable with his/her answers I would say leave it alone.
Also, ask friends/ people who can see the ring at plain sight. If they don''t see anything, the more reason not to do anything.
Talking from experience, I''m starting to believe that a jewelers first attempt is their best attempt.
Those are beautiful rings !!!!

Its off....axis and prong.

Would definitely bother me since I put so much effort into the ring and don''t they do this all the time (make rings that is)?

Send it back.

Off axis and the left side prongs are an awful mess. That would bother me no end! Return it and get it fixed before you propose...Would you really want to present your soon to be FI with a ring that you clearly knew wasn't perfect? Of course not. I would be totally bummed if I got proposed to with a ring with wonky prongs and slightly off axis and had to turn around and send it back for immediate repair. I'd fix it now, tell them exactly what you don't like and exactly what you want so there is no misunderstanding, and propose when the repaired ring comes back. Good luck!

ETA: If the basket is not perfectly square, seriously, I'd request a new setting, not futzing with a defective one. The defects you're seeing are obvious to most of us so it's not just you.

All that is really noticeable to me is the upper left prong. I think you should have it fixed before you propose. I think it would be terrible to get engaged and then have to send your ring off. So send it back tomorrow so they can get it fixed asap!!!

I think all ringmakers need to hire PS people for their quality control!!!

I agree. What should we get paid??

I see both problems and would accept neither one.

I went back to check the pictures and had a change of heart. Knowing myself, I would expect a better job.
You know, I''m just chicken scared of sending stuff back given my own experience.
I now agree with others, they should fix this for you !

I really am leaning towards sending it back as well...

It''s just that I really can not and don''t want to push back the engagement date so I doubt I will do that... Knowing my GF, she will be more than understanding and realize it may take some additional time to get it perfect (which is what I know she deserves) and if Pearlman''s/Ritani agrees, I will probably schedule sending it off right after Memorial Day (since we are out of town visiting families and she will have to have it then to show off)... I highly doubt our less-critical friends and relatives will even notice...

We have the perfect opportunity then since we are going to Mexico and I was going to get her a fake look-alike anyways...

Oh, another reason for perhaps waiting till she receives the e-ring is that I kinda made her get her finger sized rather stealthily so I am just a little worried that a 6 is not the EXACT size... This way I could kill two birds with one stone if I already have to send it off anyways... The sizing issue is complicated even more by the fact that I got all 3 at one time as well... Luckily, I was smart enough to order them with small sizing areas... Whew :)

It would have been even smarter to have waited to get those eternity wedding bands until you were SURE of the exact size! But I hope they are the right size because you really don''t want to size a pave band unless it is absolutely essential. But I guess if they can do the repair while you are in Mexico, that''s okay since she wouldn''t be taking it there anyway.

Well, in my defense (not that I thought your comment was really a jab), I was taking advantage of a truly special Pearlman''s deal in buying all 3 simultaneously ;)

Oh, good, I certainly didn''t mean that to sound mean! I think we would have advised you to wait and be sure of the size if you had asked! However, I like a good deal as well as the next person, so here''s hoping the rings are perfect!!!!

No biggie at all... In fact, whenever I tell others about PS, I am always bragging on the congeniality of all the posters here no matter what the topic...

Anyone else wanna chime in on the imperfect perfect e-ring I picked out?...

Send it back and have it fixed. You will always feel weird about it! I picked up a reset on a princess and I also have the same problem. The left side prongs are much bigger then the right side and I have been wearing it trying to say ow I am too picky but I am not, send it back now while you have time. It is driving me bonkers but I will have to wait until the weekend to take it in and have them fix it. I wonder if maybe it is just that princess stone are harder to set. Well goot luck and it is a beautiful set she will be very happy!

Just a question since reading lesco''s woes and now yours. Do many people run across these issues w/ custom rings?

I''m guessing no, but I am seeing more of these posts pop up.

And this is a Pearlman''s!

It would be very frustrating to get a defective ring and have to go through all this consternation.

In addition to all the shipping back and forth, etc.....

Just curious.
