How often to clean?

How often is it safe for me to clean my engagement ring with the ammonia/water mix? I am using one part ammonia and two parts water and am soaking it for about 5 minutes. Is twice a week too much?

some girls clean it twice a day.

but...you need that strong solution? 2 to 1

I use that solution VG and mine have been fine. Some here have recommended using water from the kettle that has just boiled plus a good splash of ammonia, I have been too scared to try the water that hot however! Twice a week should be fine with that, I tend to use it twice a week, then clean with Windex or jewellery soap in between. It works well doesn''t it? Has the mark on the ring gone now?

Oh wow, I must be obssessive. I clean mine at least once per day. Sometimes more. My rings go into their bath when I take my shower. They go in every single day. I even bring my cleaner with me when I travel. Gosh, maybe I''m a bit OCD.

No you''re not IslandDreams, I clean mine at least once a day and sometimes more, I like to alternate methods too - it''s fun!

I cannot understand folk letting them get dirty, maybe it''s just me

Island Dreams I am the same way. I clean mine every morning and if I''m going out at night I''ll clean them again. And when I travel I have a travel size of my jewelery cleaner as well. God forbid my rings got dirty while on vacay.

Other than the wedding I attended Saturday, they haven''t moved in over a month. Bathroom is ALMOST done.

Ehh... Once a month when I''m paying attention. My ring never leaves my hand except when I''m cleaning it and that is usually when there''s a special occasion. It''s a bear to clean. It was made back in the 50s when people were stilll putting half carats in illusion settings!

One thing to be careful of when soaking your rings in cleaning solutions is not to let them soak too long. My old jeweler told me years ago that cleaning agents can cause the gold to ''crystalize'' thus weakening the prongs. I do not know if this is true of platinum.
