How often for an upgrade?

UPGRADE is the most fearful word coming out of the wife's mouth!..

I wore my original 1 ct round for 30 years. We had three kids who needed braces, college funds, etc. For the 30th I got a 1.6 ct hearts and arrows round, sold it at a profit and switched to a similar size stone that was a better buy, then just upgraded this year to a 2.29 ct AVR. I do not anticipate upgrading again because I honestly do not want to put any more money into an e-ring. I would potentially upgrade color if the cost was not prohibitive, though. But I do love my current stone and anticipate no more upgrades. I'd like to move on to other jewelry!

I'm pretty much done upgrading. I have my dream ring so I'm very happy. For future birthdays and anniversarys I will just get pieces to add to my collection or perhaps a new stacker to add to my wedding set.

I want to be on this plan!!!!!

I don't think my DH nor I had a plan to upgrade, although we both joked that my diamond (.56) would grow someday. We both had substantial student loans when we were married. Children came a few years later, then a home. A larger diamond was not on my radar, and it certainly was not on DH's! There were just too many things to pay for, and I was very happy being Mrs. *****!

I believe it was more than 12 years before DH surprised me with a 2ct diamond; we kept my original diamond as it meant too much to both of us. I am not sure how many years later, my jeweler showed me an incredible 3ct diamond! I could not get it out of my head; eventually, DH traded 2ct in a deal for the 3ct. I would have been happy forever with the 3ct because it is just one of those diamonds; I still have it!

Since that time, I have acquired two more large diamonds that were not part of trade ups. I know I am blessed . . . never in my wildest dreams did I ever dream nor expect to have the jewels that I have. I don't take any of it for granted. We are now focussed more on our retirement although DH is not close to retiring. Probably no more upgrades or large purchases, but I am not complaining.

Nearly 5 years in and i am nnot seeing an upgrade in my future anytime soon Ill keep nagging though, I'm sure I'll send him in to the psych ward, might see him there on my next placement I will get him to cave one day soon... the longer he waits the smaller a 2ct look and the more appealing a 3 ct is

I spent a lot of time and money on my ering we bought 6 months ago because i said i want the ering diamond to be the one we pass down the generations! I'm already thinking of upgrading... Luckily my partner never believed me when i said I'd never upgrade! Phew! He knows me too well.

Don't you loose money upgrading so quickly? R u all upgrading privately or through upgrade policies?

He's too British to upgrade. Diamonds don't grow here the way they seem to in the states and especially on PS!

I've had my 0.47 centre, 0.71tcw ring since 2004.

I don't even have my 2 carat upgrade on my finger yet (September) and I'm already thinking about the next one. How often do you upgrade? 5 years? 10? 20? Just curious....

My vote? As often as you like - that's what upgrade policies are FOR! And it's no more or less extravagant than any other celebration: I get an eternity band for each anniversary (though a larger diamond for the fifth). If I'd wanted to go bigger over the course of those years, I'd probably be somewhat further up the weight scale ... but I really like variety, and I really like having a tangible *thing* to trigger my memories for each discrete celebration.

At present, I'm happy with my rings ... for the next big anniversary, I might upgrade my pendant, though. And for the one after that, maybe my earrings. And after that, maybe I'll be ready to change my set again. Who knows?

I feel completely enabled by DH, he would happily allow me to purchase whatever made me happy whenever it made me happy regardless of if our finances permitted, fortunately I'm much more grounded than that and the thought of spending thousands of dollars on something for myself when the same money could be put toward something the entire family could enjoy just makes me feel super guilty. Not so guilty that I haven't enjoyed a few upgrades over the years though.

The stars just happened to align for me to get what I wanted each time, and DH had no objection. I'm not the least bit sentimental about my rings - beautiful stones are beautiful stones and I appreciate incredible workmanship, but they hold no significance or deeper meaning for me! DH is the opposite - he lost his wedding band and spent days agonising over it, and eventually I dragged him to a store to replace it and we were done in an hour. He wants me to keep the stones I was married with and since they're beautiful, and in an incredibly worked setting, I'm happy to

My first three upgrades (from 0.80 to 1.16, to 1.20, to 1.67) were through Whiteflash and then Brian Gavin Diamonds. The price of diamonds had not risen too much in that time, so upgrading using their generous policies made sense. I was able to use the same mount with a new head for the first three diamonds. I think I lost about $1000 on shipping and re-setting in that time.

I sold the 1.67ct for a small profit after the huge diamond price hike in September 2011. I then learned about buying diamonds on the secondary market, and bought my 1.89ct in a platinum die struck vintage mount on ebay in July 2012 for a few thousand less than the previous diamond alone had cost. So I upgraded and pocketed money that time!

1985~upgraded with a .75 stone and a ring guard with rubies and diamonds.
2008~upgraded to a 1.70 beautiful stone from Whiteflash
2009-2010~ upgraded to a 2.57 stone from Brian Gavin and a Leon Mege setting for 30th anniversary.

I don't anticipate upgrading again. I would consider buying some other stones. Larger earrings and maybe a good size solitaire pendant.
Never say never though. Who would turn down a beautiful 4 or 5 carat in a halo like Sarah's. We would have to win the lottery.
