I haven''t picked a stone yet, but a few that where top of my list have been scooped up already.

How often do dealers pick up new stones?

Your best bet is to tell them what you''re looking for. Lots of times, stones don''t even make it to the vendors listing. Or they get listed but someone is already considering them. The good ones don''t last. Just give them a call!

Indeed.
I recently bought from WF.
They knew what I had in mind and John called me to let me know a few possibilities were on their way.

That is the best advice is to let them know what you are looking for and get them to search for you. Many diamonds in certain sizes and quality are scarce right now and many are having to be patient until the right diamond becomes available. Especially the larger carat sizes, these are getting very short on supply.

Same here. I looked for months and finally told Jonathan at GOG to look for one for me. He has access to several cutters'' stones and can bring in ones he feels are promising and run them through his tests. There are more diamonds available than are listed on his website.

I was told by WF that they get diamonds from their supplier about every 6 weeks.

yes don''t just wait around if you are serious, call and ask the vendors what is coming in soon etc. that is the best way to find something, esp in a slim pickins kind of size or similar...good luck!

I would not recommend "telling them" that you are looking for the stone.

The way it works is they find the stone that they think will match your requirements,
they bump up the price a little bit and offer you the rock.

The best way for you is to search database ( since you already know what you are looking for)
find several stones that you like, and ask them to get it for you and then decide whether you like it or not.

The key here is to KNOW WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR and to know how much that stone cost so you don''t pay premium.

Good luck.

Well, if you know that vendors pricing which is publicly posted on their sites, it would be difficult for them to bump up the price or it would be immediately noticeable. So I don''t think that is a problem. The best cut new stones that become available might not have made it to an online database yet.

That is definitely NOT true of PS vendors. Many of them work on slim margins to begin with and they would not bump up the price just because someone may be ready to buy it. It seems many PS vendors tend to price their goods based on how much THEY spend for them...not how much they randomly think they can get from a customer. Whenever I have shopped I always compare the price offered to me against other stones from similar vendors and what else is out there and it is always competitive.

i agree. I just purchased a new stone and was able to compare the price to what other vendors were offering for the same specs. with the prices and so much info on the stones listed on their sites, it''s pretty easy to do..

Do you have personal experience with a vendor doing this? Or do you just "think" that''s what they do?

I''m going to assume it''s the latter, if I''m wrong, please share your experience. However, if my assumption is correct, I would suggest being careful about making blanket statements, especially derogatory ones.

that wouldn''t be very good business practice, now would it? You remind me of my father - he never puts his blinker on because he says he doesn''t want the other drivers to know what he''s going to do. He''s convinced that people speed up to close the gap if he puts his blinker on.

Your assumption is incorrect.
I have personal experience in this - two online retailers.
(Please, don''t ask me to post their names)
Please, don''t get me wrong, I don''t say that every retailer does that.
More then that - I suspect that large volume retailer don''t do that, however I''ve seen it twice.

Regards.

Pushkin, sorry to hear that. I have had troubles with jewelers too, not pricing per say, and not online. I know how it can leave you feeling.

But no, I don''t think the big name, well known vendors on here would do that.

Thanks for clarifying.

I don''t think that any of the reputable dealers here on PS push up the price of a stone when they find one that meets a customers selection criteria... But I can tell you that if you don''t let the dealers know what you''re looking for that the odds are that when they find it, the diamond will sell to another customer on their list of people waiting for a diamond with those characteristics. Extremely well cut diamonds are in short supply right now, a lot of what we pull in sells to waiting clients before being listed so I strongly recommend picking one or two dealers who you are comfortable with and letting them work with their cutters to try and locate what you seek. Quite often the diamonds that are sourced for clients on a waiting list have never made it on to the multiple listing search engines used by the virtual dealers because many of the diamond cutters have begun to SPLIT their inventory lists and access to sections of their inventory based upon the manner in which each company is doing business (virtual vs. physical inventory); the general selection criteria used by each company; the willingness of each vendor to pay a little more for premium goods; etc. therefore things aren''t always as simple as merely cruising the vast list of diamonds in hopes of finding a few possibilities and then selecting a preferred dealer to represent the diamond to you. Work it backwards, pick the dealer, let them help you find the right diamond for your preferences.

fabulous advice todd...! i definitely agree that pickins are slim in many ranges of sizes and i would definitely not wait for things to surface on a virtual listing.
