Considering some of the recent posts out there about what people can afford, this made me wonder.Since were all from such different backrounds I thought it would be interesting to hear from all you guys out there, what is the top price you would ever pay for an engagement ring? This is includes upgrades and all. And secondly could you easily afford that?

I''ll start......my hubby confessed to me that he would of paid between 3k and 5k. We couldn''t of afforded it outright but he would of saved up or gotten a loan at his federal credit union to repay. Even after the upgrade my ring came to....total cost of 2.5k. It''s honestly what I felt comfortable spending not him. Considering we are young and not financially stable....we don''t have a house yet or anything! I would of felt like I was letting him waste cash to spend more than that. And with that amount and how it was spread out he was able to pay it all upfront and in cash. Of course I got something I really liked and at a great quality... I just didn''t go any bigger than .83ct. So I guess maybe in the future when were all settled this means I have 2k worth of an upgrade :)

I myself, would not take out a loan for a piece of jewelry. If I can''t afford it, then there''s nothing to think about. I''d rather have a place to live than a nice diamond on my hand. Just my opinion.

Good question.

I think what we feel comfortable paying may depend on age and on stability. If we already have a house we love etc. Then we feel OK spending more.

That said I''m sure some people have no idea of what a diamond costs, are 18/20 yrs old and just know that they want a certain size. So they end up with a poorly cut stone from a mall store where they can get a loan.

So... what is the formula for how much one is supposed to spend for an engagement ring? I thought it was based on a month''s salary or something, but I don''t remember...

My thought is, I don''t think anyone should spend more than they can afford. No sense eating Top Ramen just to wear a big rock!

Well I agree with what you all are saying but that wasn''t the topic

I''m saying you have unlimited funds.......someone is just saying to you...how much at the most would you feel comfortable with paying for wedding jewelry? And after you think of what that figure is, do you think you could ever afford that?

well, I''m not one to upgrade... I''d rather *add* to my collection than get rid of anything that is sentimental LOL That said, I elected to forego an e-ring when we got married because we couldn''t afford what I wanted... Now we''ve been married 15 years and I''m looking to spend 15k on a ring. There''s a part of me that knows that since I will never upgrade that maybe I should wait until the 25th and spend 25k! LOL I think if there was unlimited funds I''d do 2k a year for 30k or tell him a grand for every year I''ve known him (31) hehehe, but I''m not sure that amount of money would buy me a better ring for every day use. I figure this will be perfect for an every day ring on my left hand and if at some point we HAVE the ulimited funds I can play with gemstones or RHRs or pendants or something else.

I understand that. I have my original ering stone, which really is very very bad in a different setting and still wear it on my right hand. I wouldn''t upgrade again......unless I became mysteriously fabulously wealthy or something. Do you have a thread going with your new ering search?

Not at the moment... there is a lot of waiting going on and I''ve been advised not to obsess too much about it online LOL The waiting is killing me sometimes, but then I take a deep breath and repeat the mantra, "it''s worth the wait, it''s worth the wait" and deep down I know it IS worth the wait even if it ends up taking months and months... If you click on my avatar and on my threads you''ll see a thread called fancy guru and another on settings for max brilliance... those wander down my road a bit... hehehe...

My fiance would have spent 10K. We ended up getting what we wanted for around 6K. I was happy with that.
