How much should I pay for this antique diamond ring?

Hi,
I'm new here, I've been reading, researching diamonds and rings, and trying to educate myself. You guys have been helpful in that so far, so thanks!
I've been looking at rings for my girlfriend, and I think that antique rings are neat, and I wanted something a little more unique. I found this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Antique-Certified-1-2ct-Diamond-18K-White-Gold-Art-Deco-Engagement-Ring-/390543115593?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5aee2f0549 and am thinking of trying to get it. I know this is short notice, as the auction doesn't have much time left. I put in the specs for the stone in the HCA calculator here, and it scored an 8.7 (not good). It does look like a pretty ring though, and they have a 7 day return policy. How much do you think this ring might actually be worth?
Thanks

Well- it's a modern stone stuck in an antique mount. Usually they don't put they best stones in there when they replace originals....Why don't you let people here help you find something antique that's got a nicer stone?

It looks pretty, but you can do better. I'm also not totally convinced it is antique...

70% table

that stone is a piece of trash no offence to you

its really so terrible i would rather buy buckets of pennies

the setting is very nice and delicate looking,
but the main stone o my gosh its so bad

the table looks massive and the stone looks out of round

i have a stone just like it and i hate that stone its a waste of money when your eyes are not pleased

the way the vendor took the photos and has papers makes it look more legit,

but its a trick . buy a diamond from somebody who is selling a bunch of antiques, and 1 diamond ring

they wont get as much money as the guy who only sells diamonds, even tho it may be higher quality than the diamond vendor.
People who take poor photos are usually not trying to hide things as much as you might think. its difficult to take photos.
the ones who take the best photos will get the best $ and i would be weary of those ring vendors on ebay offering savings
due to bankruptcy sales or whatever the catch is.

ps i actually looked at the diamond report after my comments above and wow 70% table?
thats so bad and the measurements 4.74-4.68 only confirm my guess

That wasn't nice. Generally, we are kind around here when we don't care for a stone or think someone can do better. While I agree that the stone is far from great, there were much nicer ways to say it. You were just rude.

OP, you can much better (though the setting is nice).

Thanks for the tips everyone. I figured the stone was bad after looking at the cut info like I said, but I do really like the setting (that's what was drawing me to it). I would be willing to overlook a stone that wasn't great if it was an antique and part of a ring that I liked a lot overall, but like was mentioned, it's probably a cheap new stone stuck in an antique mount I guess.

Any suggestions for finding a good antique ring similar to that, while on a budget? Would it be easier to find just a setting and get my own stone, or find a complete ring? Should I start a separate thread for suggestions for this?

Sqarborough,

Start a new thread asking for help finding an antique ring and include your budget plus things you like. You can even include a photo of this ring to show what kind of setting you like.

There are several people on here who are incredibly talented at finding beautiful antique diamonds and settings that fit any budget. I'm sure they will be able to help you find something your future fiancé will love.

Thanks E B, I do like that one too. Do you think that seller would be a good place to potentially buy from, and is that a pretty good price for it?

Thanks Libby, I'll probably go ahead and make another thread like you suggested.

What is your budget? Then we can offer suggestions.

Also have you checked with your GF to see if see even likes antique rings and old cut diamonds? While they have gained a lot of popularity recently I would still check before you purchase.

Yes, she does like antique rings, and a bit more unique things like this. She is fine with newer rings as well, and isn't super picky. She likes rings that aren't too big or flashy, and likes to keep it more on the simple side. She's pretty small, with smaller hands/fingers, so a diamond wouldn't have to be very big to look good on her.
As for budget, I don't have one set 100% but I would probably like to keep it under $2k if possible, the further under the better :)
I'm a stickler for finding good deals.

Try looking at Jewels by Erica Grace. I think they have some amazing rings that are just around that budget. Plus you can ask if they have any wiggle room with the price (they usually do), and they have a 0% layaway plan.

Dude, no pressure (Ha!) but you SHOULD absolutely snatch that $2,050 one right now. It is from a very reputable vendor, nice diamond, and that setting alone could sell for $1200+. If you think at all that she'd like a pretty vintage ring, I would totally, totally get this. But no pressure!! Ask for the Pricescope discount and do layaway. From what you described about her it sounds like it could thrill her. Put it on hold and ask others what they think here on Pricescope...Good luck ;))
