Hi,

Unfortunately I am in the market for a new diamond. I just bought a 3 stone emerald cut ring which I love! My original stone was a round stone, .81ct and I still wear it on occasion (I have been married many years so its sentimental). Anyhow, the diamond popped out of the setting. I am devastated. My husband too. My insurance company was great and has issued me a check. The original stone was an F/VVS1 and my husband agreed with me that now that we know more about stones than 13 years ago, we are going to go for an H color, VS1 or VS2 so that I can hit the 1 carat mark, or slightly over for the same cost as the lost .81 ct F/VVS1. But focus on cut, cut, cut.

Anyhow, I want to get a heavy platinum solitaire setting with a 6 prong head. The original stone was in a 4 prong head and the jeweler said one prong failed and thats why the stone was lost. Had it been 6 prongs, one failed prong would cause the stone to rattle, not fall out.

My question is how heavy is too heavy for a solitaire? I want to stick to 3mm for the band. I like a thickish band. And I want the setting and head to feel substantial but not overwhelming.

How heavy in grams should the setting be? Whats the max? min?

Can anyone post phones of solitaires in heavy substantial yet simple platinum settings with 6 prongs around 3mm in width?

You may even want to consider dropping to an SI1/SI2. You''ll be able to go even larger and assuming its 100% eye clean, won''t even be able to tell the difference in clarity.

Good luck in your search.

If you''re looking for a classic solitaire, I''m a fan of the Stuller Solstice. It is substantia while still having a classic, timeless look. Your own jeweler could order it for you.

The Stuller Solstice is yummy! Following a recent similar situation---original stone BROKE thanks to a not-very-protective setting, so this time I got the Whiteflash Classic Tiffany Knife edge and I feel it''s substantial and classic yet delicate enough not to overpower the stone. Just another suggestion.

My vote would be for a Mark Morrell Sunburst. 3mm at the base, tapers up to 2mm at the head and a sturdy 6 prong setting. Not to mention breathtaking!

A bit on the pricey side, but I doubt you''d ever need to replace it - PLUS, you get what you pay for with his work IMO.
