It seems that we spend a fair amount of time on the internet, so how many of you have a personal blog?

me! I''ve been writing for about 6 months and I like it a lot. It helps me vent but also helps me keep up my writing skills, and since it''s published on a local blogroll, I''ve got several local readers I haven''t met yet, but intend to meet, thus hopefully making new friends.

I used to, years ago, back when they were still somewhat "new," but got bored with it after a few months.

I think that if all you do is talk about yourself and your life, there are better things to do with your time. However, there are a number of professional blogs ("blawg" is the term in the legal field) that I read on a regular basis.

I have a Livejournal account that I rarely post to. I use it to read up on the wedding planning and teaching communities I joined.

I had a blog a few years ago that I used as a student teaching reflection journal. My university supervisor was able to access it from anywhere and it worked great for keeping notes on my experiences. I later had to take it down. I was asked to have it included in a newspaper article around the same time a teacher at the same school stumbled upon it and recognized herself in it though I had changed names.

I don''t blog write, but it has been great for reconnecting with old friends and sharing pictures...

I have a blog that I''ve written in since 1999, so quite a while. I''ve also started hoarding a few domain names; at one point I owned 7 but now I''m down to 5.

islanddreams, is it because your company assumes that you are going to post something inappropriate? why such great opposition?

I don't have a blog myself, but my friend just recently started one. she's working in a relief agency down in the dominican republic helping haitian refugees. she went back and forth about starting one up, but i'm so glad she did. Hearing her experiences and seeing pictures of what life is like there has really been inspirational.

and while it's much less do-gooder, i love to check in on the satorialist. it's a blog about NYC street fashion.

ETA: also, isn't posting on a website like this sort of akin to blogging? I'm not trying to be confrontational, just curious.

No

...but I do know that employers are googling candidates names. I would be careful what you post.

i tried the blog thing, but really it was taking more time than it was worth. i may try a new approach to it at some point...

i do however have a website that hosts a few graphics, photographs, and an online portfolio... rather professional stuff. as fire&ice mentioned.... employers do google. the benefit of having content on my own domain is while they spy on me (find out more info via the net) i am spying on them to see what the viewed on my site and how much time they spent on various pages.

bottom line.. information can be good or dangerous. depends on how you control it.

fyi, my blog had NO connection to me besides city / state / age / gender.

I dont have a blog but I do have a myspace page. No personal info on it though. Just pictures of my hubby & baby. it's a good way for me to keep in touch with family & friends. I can see why an employer wouldnt want you to have a blog or personal page. A lot people add very personal or inappropriate material. These days you have to be so careful what you put online, you never know who is looking at it. I am afraid of even posting pictures who knows who is looking at them or what they will do them.

Mine doesn''t have any connection to me via google... you can''t look me up and find it. Of course, I wouldn''t want my employer to google me anyway because there''s a rather prolific pornstar with both my first AND last names!!! UGH! One of the reasons I''m going to change it when we get married... I don''t include pictures of myself or my FI either, no identifying info for strangers to find us. Because mine is published locally on a blogroll he was a little worried people would know where we lived, when we were traveling, etc... so I''m careful about that. I also don''t often blog about work. It''s just not very interesting. I tell stories about my inner-city neighborhood, travel, things I like, etc... right now I''m ranting about our power company and what they did to our house! Nothing that would get me in trouble.

I think the new college grads with detailed myspace pages are going to have issues in the job force. It''s really amazing what people post.

lovelylulu--I''ve been advised not to blog because blogs are part of what HR checks before hiring or promoting. Blogs give insight into people''s personality and personal lives. Those things can help or hurt you in your current job or future one. I''ve been told the same thing by recruiters...that you really need to not write your blog in a way that people can identify you.
