anyone know how many X-magnification for reading the laser inscription on the girdle ?
cause i purchase a 3 bucks 6X magnifier, couldnt see a damn thing on a .35ct stone.
I have a 10x loupe, and I can't see the inscription on my 1.2 ct stone. I have to put it under a microscope at a jeweler, and even then it's difficult to make out because the black residue has been cleaned out so the inscription is pretty much "clear".
Using a cheap loupe won''t get you very far. You get what you pay for. Loupes need to be abberation corrected and color corrected for use in examiniing diamonds, the cheap ones just don''t have this, and as a result are really less than a satisfactory view is achieved.
The method for seeing an inscription depends a lot on how wide the girdle is where the inscribed is inscribed. I have noticed a lot of variance in the size of the type.
It isn''t too difficult to see the inscription at 10x ( assuming you have good eyes for this ) but most are difficult to read.
Positioning the stone to see it is often rather important to see the inscription. Best method is to reflect the light off so the area is sort of glared out, then you can see where the inscription breaks the surface easier.
In the case where the inscription is clear, it is more difficult but not impossible.
I have a 30X loupe that I purchased on ebay for around ten bucks. It works great. I can see my inscription just fine. Just remember that you need good lighting to see anything.
Don''t throw away your money on a cheap loupe. Optics (that work) are always expensive. If you really want a loupe, be sure to buy a Hastings triplet loupe of at least 10X. Expect a decent loupe to cost in the range of $35 - $75.
If you don''t want to spend the money, borrow a loupe from someone. If you want to look at a diamond in a store, any jeweler will have several around that would let you use use while on their premesis. You could always bring a diamond you own into the jeweler to examine it.
Inscriptions can be read with a 14X loupe, but with difficulty.
I have a 12x loupe and can see the inscription on mine (it still has the black to make it easier to see). If I look at the opposite girdle I can read the inscription backwards...Is that wild or normal? I found it to be fascinating.
