This is a touchy subject with me and I was JUST complaining to FI about it

My boss approached me and said that I need to be here by 8:30 because that's the official office hours (8:30 to 5). I get here between 9 and 9:15 but I stay until 8:30/9pm almost every night.

Here's why it makes me angry. In order to be here at 9am, I have to be on the road at 8:20. That means I can wake up at 7am, eat breakfast at home, wait for my DD to wake up on her own, feed her, drive calmly to work, and be on the road for just 40 minutes. And MIL has time to eat her breakfast, take a shower, and prepare some things before we arrive. When I get to work, I turn on my computer and start working immediately.

In order for me to be at work at 8:30, I have to leave my house at 7am. That means waking up at 5:30am to get ready, waking DD up an hour earlier so she's cranky as heck, forcing her to scarf down her bottle, and if she doesn't eat quick enough, stopping and having MIL (who has to wake up way earlier to do everything she needs to do) give her the bottle when she gets there. I'm in traffic for 1.5 hours and by the time I get to work I'm stressed, frustrated, and tense. I turn on my computer but don't get to work immediately because no one is available, everyone is getting breakfast which is what I end up doing also because I'm starving. And I STILL leave at 8:30/9pm.

Man these type of stories really annoy me, some employers are so short sighted. Fiery if I were you I would try and bring this up with HR again to work out some type of flexible work arrangement for you, especially given that you could quite easily modify your work hours by changing your start time to 9am and finish time to 6pm. If your boss has made a point of speaking to you about it, then you should make a point of bringing it up with HR to make sure they understand why you need a more flexible start time.

I know where I live (and I think also in the UK) it is a legal requirement to agree to requests for flexible work arrangements if the request is reasonable in the circumstances. Your situation seems more than reasonable especially given that you work late almost every night anyway!

If i leave at 6:30 am, about 15-20 minutes...if I leave at a reasonably 8 am, about 30-45 minutes. Yay!

20 minute drive to train station
5-10 minute to find parking place / wait for train
25 minute ride on train
15 minute walk to office building
So just over an hour without having to sit in much traffic (plus I can get work done on the train if I want).

I could drive all the way into town in about 40 mins but then I would need another hour to calm down from the stupidity of other drivers

7-12 minutes depending on if I hit the green lights.

For school I drive about 15-20 minutes one way. I am also student teaching and drive 35-40 minutes one way for that.
