You missed the 28 days to 2 months category. My guess is that about what it took us, but it depends on when you start the clock. We looked around for a while before deciding to buy. Then the searching and purchasing probably took a month to 6 weeks.
I looked sporadically for a few months, deciding on the shape and size.
When I had narrowed it down to 2 shapes (oval and cushion), and approximate size (I knew I wanted 5+ carats) it took me 5 months to find my stone, but I usually only saw a stone or two every couple of weeks.
I wasn''t sure if the poll also referred to "active education" to learn about cut/clarity/etc or just the actual "active search" time. If my education period was to be included, I''d say about 2-3 months...but if the active search/buy time took about 2-3 weeks between the setting and the center stone.
4-6 months cause there are so few Marquise cuts out there that I liked and some ps venders were not the easist to work with.
Still a bit shocked at what I bought as I did everything by the book and still don''t know the quality of it.
I like planning ahead so I began looking in January for shapes and sizes. At first my girlfriend wanted a cushion cut, but I had a very hard time finding something good that was within my price range. Finally, when my girlfriend agreed that a round would be okay it was easy to go on pricescope and narrow down the choices. The hard part was splitting hairs to pick the "best" from the choices. Overall, it took me 4-6 months, but only about 1-2 months of real shopping.
I looked at "options" for years. I needed to sell the diamond I had before I could get serious though. When I finally decided I was ready to upgrade/change shape, I was lucky enough to sell my diamond to a friend. She really liked it, and I made her a SWEET deal she could not refuse. I then used the cash toward my 2 ct. pear. I had a couple of favorite dealers at the time, and they each had one or two pears with decent specs to choose from. I then literally went back and forth between the two, all in one day (not quite as good as seeing them side by side, but it was the best I could do), and made my choice.
